New UW MBA Students Kick Off Year with Unique Experiential Learning Opportunities

The fall 2018 semester doesn’t begin officially until Aug. 29 at the University of Wyoming, but the incoming class of UW Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program students already is fully engaged.

This week, the new graduate students embark on an outdoor leadership experience, as they will spend the week in the Wind River Mountains developing leadership skills in the wilderness while camping and hiking.

“The goal for the group during the outdoor leadership experience program is to improve leadership competence by focusing on teamwork in a nontraditional business setting,” says Steve Farkas, UW College of Business assistant dean. “It’s one of many unique qualities that sets the University of Wyoming’s MBA Program apart from other institutions and provides our students a remarkable experience that welcomes them to the program.”

Next week, the group will continue its travels to Jackson for the MBA Leadership Summit. At the summit, students attend a panel discussion with corporate leaders and participate in a meet-and-greet dinner. This year’s featured keynote speakers include former Vice President Dick Cheney and Bob Grady, a venture capitalist, private equity investor and former senior-level public official.

Previous Jackson Leadership Summits have featured corporate leaders from a variety of companies, such as Procter & Gamble, DHL Worldwide, Conoco, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan Chase.

On the final day in Jackson, students have historically participated in whitewater rafting or zip lining.

MBA Program leaders say the team-building and leadership activities, as well as the opportunities to be with corporate leaders, are a great way to kick off a time when students work as a tightly knit team over the course of two years to achieve business leadership knowledge and skills.

UW’s MBA Program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International, with a job placement rate of over 90 percent.

“We are excited to equip these students both academically and professionally for the world of business, and connect them to professionals in myriad industries through unique experiential learning opportunities, where opportunities are born and careers are created,” Farkas says.
