UW Reminds Employees, Students of Film and Photography Policy

With a new school year about to begin, election season underway and high-profile events scheduled on campus, the University of Wyoming’s Central Scheduling office asks employees and students to review UW’s film and photography policy when planning events.

Incidental, noncommercial filming or photography in public areas of campus by university faculty and staff members, students, visitors or tourists is permitted with no approval process, provided such filming or photography does not interrupt campus programs, classes or activities, and does not require any special campus services.

Filming or photography for internal use or commercial use requires approval. Examples of internal use include university student filming and broadcast or print media primarily for university use. Commercial filming and photography include theatrical releases; broadcast or print media; photographs for calendars, works of art or other commercial products; public service announcements; and documentary media.

The event organizer must submit an application for filming and photography to Central Scheduling for review and approval. Upon approval, Central Scheduling will provide a facilities use permit to the organizer if the filming or photography request is for internal use. If the event includes commercial filming or photography, a location use agreement is required, and a fee will be assessed for use of the space.

“The approval process requires at least seven business days before filming or photography can take place,” says Crystal Bennett, Central Scheduling manager. “I encourage people to keep this in mind when planning events to allow enough time to complete the necessary paperwork.”
