Former ACLU President to Speak at UW Oct. 8

Nadine Strossen, former president of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), will be at the University of Wyoming to discuss free speech on campus Monday, Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the College of Education auditorium.

Her presentation is titled “Free Speech on Campus: What Limits Should There Be?” Strossen has presented on more than 500 campuses nationwide and in many foreign countries.

A question-and-answer session and a meet-and-greet will follow Strossen’s presentation at 8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

In her discussions, Strossen talks about the dangers that follow efforts to serve justice by limiting civil rights. She also offers useful and applicable strategies for achieving positive outcomes without violating constitutional rights. From government surveillance and decriminalization of drugs, to sexual harassment, Strossen makes even complex issues accessible through the use of illuminating statistics and true-life stories.

Strossen has more than 300 published works. Her book, “Defending Pornography: Free Speech, Sex, and the Fight for Women’s Rights,” was named as a “notable book” by The New York Times.

She has been named one of the “100 Most Influential Lawyers in America” by the National Law Journal twice; listed among the “350 Women Who Changed the World 1976-1996” by Working Woman magazine; and included in “America’s 200 Most Influential Women,” according to Vanity Fair.

Currently, Strossen is a member of the ACLU’s National Advisory Council. She also serves as a professor at New York University School of Law. Strossen graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School. Before becoming a professor, Strossen practiced law in Minneapolis, Minn., for nine years.
