University of Wyoming Calendar for Oct. 1

These are among the activities scheduled Oct. 1-7 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, Oct. 1, 3:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Karen Vaughan, a UW assistant professor of soil pedology. The lecture will be in the S.H. Knight Geology Building, Room 216. A reception will follow in the UW Geological Museum. Free.

Tuesday, Oct. 2, noon -- The UW Office of Academic Affairs presents best-selling author Jeffrey Selingo in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. He will discuss his latest book, “There Is Life After College.” Free.

Tuesday, Oct. 2, 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m. -- Alyson Hagy, UW Creative Writing Program professor, will sign copies of her new novel, “Scribe,” at Second Story Books, located at 105 E. Ivinson Ave. in Laramie. Hagy will be joined by Brad Watson, UW Creative Writing Program director, for a brief conversation about writing novels at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Free.

Tuesday, Oct. 2, 6:30 p.m. -- Cowgirl volleyball vs. Colorado State University, UniWyo Sports Complex. Ticket prices vary.

Tuesday, Oct. 2, 7 p.m. -- UW Planetarium show, “This Month’s Sky.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204, or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/physics/ and clicking on “Planetarium Schedule.”

Wednesday, Oct. 3-Thursday, Oct. 4, 7:30 a.m.-4:45 p.m. -- The Wyoming Center on Aging will host the Wyoming Conference on Aging at the UW Conference Center. Tickets cost $50 per day or $100 for both days. A preconference training for health care/professional services providers will be offered Tuesday, Oct. 2, at a cost of $35. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 12:10-12:50 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host “Lunchtime Conversations with Curators,” an informal gallery walk-through. Melanie Yazzie, artist, exhibition organizer and professor of printmaking at the University of Colorado-Boulder, will join the discussion of the exhibition “Indigenous Mapping: Collecting Truths.” Lunch will be provided following the gallery walk-through. Free.

Wednesday, Oct. 3, 5 p.m. -- Lilia Soto will discuss her book detailing the lives of immigrant/migrant teenage girls in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. Soto is a UW associate professor of American studies and Latina/o studies. Her discussion is part of the Hispanic Heritage Month book talk series. Free.

Wednesday, Oct. 3-Saturday, Oct. 6, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Theatre and Dance will open the fall season with “Below the Navel Above the Knees” in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts Studio Theatre. Tickets cost $14 for the public, $11 for senior citizens and $7 for students. Tickets cost $5 for opening night. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Thursday, Oct. 4, 6:30 p.m. -- Cowgirl volleyball vs. Air Force Academy, UniWyo Sports Complex. Ticket prices vary.

Thursday, Oct. 4, 7 p.m. -- StudioWYO presents its first comedy night of the semester with special guest AJ Finney. The show will take place in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Thursday, Oct. 4, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Collegiate Chorale, the Laramie High School Plainsmen Singers and Laramie Middle School singers will present “Angels,” a concert to commemorate the death of Matthew Shepard, an openly gay UW student from Casper, who was murdered in 1998. The concert will be in the Performing Arts concert hall. Free.

Friday, Oct. 5, 2 p.m. -- “The Matthew Shepard Story: In Conversation with Rulon Stacey,” a staged reading, will take place in the Performing Arts Thrust Theatre. The reading recounts when Poudre Valley Hospital CEO Stacey announced the death of Shepard and the events that followed. Free.

Friday, Oct. 5, 3 p.m. -- Cowgirl soccer vs. Colorado College, Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. Free.

Friday, Oct. 5, 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. -- 7220 Entertainment’s Films Committee will screen “Eighth Grade” in the Wyoming Union Family Room. Free.

Friday, Oct. 5, 8 p.m. -- UW Planetarium show, “From Bang to Bust.” The STAR Observatory on the rooftop of the Physical Sciences Building will be open from 8-10 p.m. Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204, or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/physics/ and clicking on “Planetarium Schedule.”

Saturday, Oct. 6, 9 a.m. -- A special edition of Saturday University, the half day of lectures and discussion offered by UW, will take place on the UW campus. “Remembering Matthew Shepard and His Murder: 20 Years Later” will remember the events leading up to and after the death of Shepard. The program will be in the Classroom Building, Room 129. Free.

Saturday, Oct. 6, 10 a.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host Family Saturday Workshop, an open studio, maker space-inspired workshop. Free.

Saturday, Oct. 6, 6 p.m. -- The Chinese Students and Scholars Association will host the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. Free.

Saturday, Oct. 6, 7:30 p.m. -- Grammy Award-winning choir Conspirare will perform “Considering Matthew Shepard” in the Laramie High School (LHS) theater. The performance is free, but ticketed. A limit of two tickets per person is available at the Performing Arts box office, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts. Overflow seating with monitors will be available in the LHS commons area.

Saturday, Oct. 6, 8 p.m. -- Comedian and actor Ken Jeong will perform a stand-up comedy set in the UW College of Arts and Science auditorium. Tickets cost $30 for the public and $20 for students.
