University of Wyoming Calendar for Sept. 10

These are among the activities scheduled Sept. 10-16 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, Sept. 10, 3:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Brad Singer, a professor in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He will discuss “Dynamics and hazards of the large, restless, rhyolitic magma system beneath Laguna del Maule, Chile” in the S.H. Knight Geology Building, Room 216. A reception will follow in the UW Geological Museum. Free.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 12:20 p.m. -- The UW Division of Kinesiology and Health’s Intellectual Community Seminar Series presents Gretchen Sewczak-Claude, an assistant lecturer in the division. Her presentation will be in the Corbett Building, Room 137. Free.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 4 p.m. -- The UW chapter of Phi Beta Kappa presents Dava Newman, a former deputy administrator of NASA and the Apollo Professor of Astronautics and Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She will discuss “Exploring Space for Earth: Earth’s Vital Signs Revealed” in the Classroom Building, Room 129. Free.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 5:30 p.m. -- Alexander Heffner, the host of PBS’s “The Open Mind,” will be a keynote speaker for a program on civil discourse. He will discuss “Civil Discourse in an Uncivil Age: The Quest for a Post-Partisan Citizenship” in the UW College of Arts and Sciences auditorium. A panel discussion will follow. Free.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 7 p.m. -- UW Planetarium full-dome movie, “Cosmic Origins Spectrograph.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 4 p.m. -- The UW Police Department (UWPD) will hold its annual found property auction at the UWPD north parking lot, located at 1426 E. Flint St. A viewing for items to be sold will start at 3 p.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 12, 4:10 p.m. -- The UW President’s Speaker Series presents Marsha Knight, a UW Department of Theatre and Dance professor. Knight will discuss her research and the production of her original stage work “Six Songs from Ellis” on the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts main stage. A reception will follow in the Performing Arts Center lobby. Free.

Wednesday, Sept. 12, 8 p.m. -- Comedian Dave Coulier will perform in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. He will be joined by special guest Kellen Erskine. Free.

Thursday, Sept. 13, noon -- Gamelan Candra Wyoga, Wyoming’s Balinese music ensemble, will perform on Simpson Plaza in front of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Thursday, Sept. 13, 7 p.m. -- StudioWYO will host its first singer-songwriter night of the season. The show will take place in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Friday, Sept. 14, 1 p.m. -- A dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for UW’s Marna M. Kuehne Foundation Veterans Services Center will take place at the center, located on the third floor of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Friday, Sept. 14, 1-4 p.m. -- The UW Art Museum and the American Heritage Center will host a public open house to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their shared building, the Centennial Complex. The open house will feature tours and highlights from exhibitions and collections. The event will include art-making activities and musical performances. Free.

Friday, Sept. 14, 4-5:30 p.m. -- The UW Alumni Association will host a Kickoff Friday event at the Alumni Center in the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center. The event will include light appetizers and a cash bar.

Friday, Sept. 14, 6:30 p.m. -- UW alumna Beverly Seckinger will screen her 2004 documentary, “Laramie Inside Out,” as part of UW’s 20th anniversary remembrance of Matthew Shepard’s murder. A panel discussion will follow the screening in the Wyoming Union. Free.

Friday, Sept. 14, 7-11 p.m. -- UW and Laramie Main Street Alliance will host the Downtown Mash Up, an event designed to bring UW students and the Laramie community together. The evening will include live music, food trucks, the UW spirit squad, games and other entertainment.
