The University of Wyoming’s 2018 Homecoming is set for Oct. 13-20, with the theme “The World Needs More Cowboys.”

Homecoming activities will range from department open house celebrations, tailgate parties, various student activities and the annual Homecoming parade to the All Alumni and Friends Reunion in conjunction with the Pokes pregame pep rally. Homecoming is sponsored by UniWyo Federal Credit Union.

The celebration will culminate with the annual Homecoming football game, when the Cowboys take on Utah State University at 12:30 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.

The Big Event, a community service program, will kick off Homecoming Week Saturday, Oct. 13, at 9 a.m. The Big Event allows UW students to say “thank you” to residents of the Laramie community. Students volunteer at homes, businesses and local nonprofits. For more information, visit www.uwyo.edu/bigevent.

The grand marshals for the Homecoming parade are Gov. Matt Mead and first lady Carol Mead. Matt Mead (J.D. ’87) and Carol Mead (B.S. ’88) have two children and own and operate an agriculture business in southeast Wyoming. The business includes a farm in Goshen County and a ranch in Albany County.

Mead, a Jackson native, has served as Wyoming’s 32nd governor since January 2011. He is currently wrapping up his second term. Before being elected governor, Mead served as a county prosecutor in Gillette; a federal prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Cheyenne; and as U.S. Attorney for Wyoming from 2001-07.

Carol Mead is the author of two books: “Wyoming Firsts” and “Blazing Wyoming Bonnets.” During her tenure as first lady, Mead has promoted literacy in schools and has enjoyed reading to children throughout the state.

She has encouraged parents and children to read together daily; worked with the UW College of Education to establish the Literacy Research Center and Clinic; and showcased Wyoming high school students’ artwork at the governor’s residence.

Homecoming registration will take place Friday, Oct. 19, from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 20, from 8-11 a.m. at the Alumni Center in the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center, located at 222 S. 22nd St. At registration, participants can pick up a University Store discount coupon (only for UW graduates) and the Homecoming events schedule booklet, as well as update their contact information.

The UW Alumni Association (UWAA) will celebrate the 50th Club Reunion Oct. 19-20. The reunion will celebrate the honoree class of 1968, while also inviting all alumni who have graduated earlier to attend. Registration is open through Oct. 7 at wyoalumni.uwyo.edu/50threunion or email Emily Vernon at evernon@uwyo.edu for a registration packet.

The UWAA also will honor the 2018 Distinguished Alumni and Medallion Service Award recipients. Profiles of the award recipients can be found online in the September issue of the UWyo Magazine at www.uwyo.edu/uwyo.

Cowboy Coffee at the All Alumni and Friends Reunion is Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center from 8-11 a.m. Breakfast items, along with a cash bar, will be available. UWAA members with ID cards will receive one complimentary drink ticket. First Interstate Bank sponsors the event.

The event is in conjunction with the Pokes pregame pep rally featuring the Western Thunder Marching Band and UW cheer team. UW football Coach Craig Bohl will give remarks at 10:15 a.m., followed by the Cowboy Walk.

The Homecoming parade begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, starting at Ninth Street and Ivinson Avenue. The UWAA coordinates the parade.

Those interested in participating in the parade must fill out an application and return it to the Alumni Office at the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center by Friday, Oct. 12, at 4 p.m. Applications are available at www.uwyo.edu/homecoming.

The football game Saturday, Oct. 20, is against Utah State University at 12:30 p.m. The Pepsi Pregame Zone (in the Indoor Practice Facility northeast of the stadium) opens three hours before kickoff.
