UW Signs Articulation Agreement with Southern Alberta Institute of Technology

The University of Wyoming’s School of Energy Resources recently signed an articulation agreement with Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), which is located in Calgary.

The agreement will allow students at SAIT graduating with a degree in energy asset management to transfer to UW and receive two years of credit toward the Bachelor of Science degree in energy resource management and development. Transfer students would have five semesters remaining at UW.

“UW already has a strong relationship with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology through the petroleum engineering program,” says Tara Righetti, director of the professional land management concentration. “In 2017, the Canadian consul general visited UW, and the strong partnerships and synergies between both institutions and the province of Alberta and the state of Wyoming were emphasized. A formal MOU already exists between both institutions. This articulation expands that relationship.”

The Energy Resource Management and Development Bachelor of Science Professional Land Management Program is accredited by the American Association of Professional Landmen. The program prepares nationally accredited professional landmen for long-term competitive success in the energy industry. The landman has an important role in maintaining sound stewardship of energy resources and applying knowledge in energy, geology, engineering, business, law, economics, finance and regulatory policy.

The unique curriculum includes classes in federal public land law, contracts, negotiations, property law I and II, oil and gas law, advanced oil and gas law, and natural resources law and policy.

In the past, students from SAIT’s petroleum technology program have transferred into UW’s engineering program, says Righetti, who is not yet sure how many SAIT students to expect to transfer into UW’s professional land management concentration.

“We had strong interest in transfer opportunities during our visit to SAIT Oct. 4,” Righetti explains. “I would be very pleased if we had two to four students transfer in the first two years, and expect that it would grow thereafter.”

Righetti believes that graduates from the combined program will have a unique skill set that will position them well for entry into the energy industry.

“It provides an opportunity for students to graduate with fluency in both the Canadian and U.S. systems of land management for energy development,” she says.

For the last two years, Righetti says the Professional Land Management Program has had 100 percent employment at graduation and has numerous companies looking to hire students from the program.

“I frequently have to tell potential employers that all of our students already have full-time positions,” Righetti says. “Currently, we don't have enough students to meet demand in the industry, and we expect this demand to grow as we continue to see companies taking interest in Wyoming.”
