Donors to Double Their Money During Fourth Annual UW Giving Day

November 19, 2018

Not everyone can double his or her money in a single day, but that’s exactly what’s happening at the University of Wyoming Nov. 27 -- UW Giving Day.

The fourth annual UW Giving Day will take place Tuesday, Nov. 27, from midnight to midnight. This day of giving follows the shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday and coincides with the international tradition of Giving Tuesday.

Donors who give on Giving Tuesday can have their donations to the university doubled. Members of the UW Foundation’s Board of Directors have personally created a matching fund of $50,000 that will match gifts dollar for dollar for up to $1,000 per donor on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The UW Foundation Board’s personal commitment to Giving Day is truly amazing,” says Jack Tennant, UW Foundation director of annual giving. “I am excited to watch how their gift will excite, engage and motivate our alumni and supporters Nov. 27. I hope others will join the board and myself in making a gift that day. Either way, we’re very thankful for all those who continue to support the university.”

In 2017, UW Giving Day raised $364,455 in gifts and pledges in a single day. Two hundred sixteen donors gave gifts ranging from $1 to thousands of dollars in support of areas across campus and out into the state. Donations came from across the U.S. and around the world.

Funds support those areas that are chosen by the donor. In 2017, donors supported the colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering and Applied Science, Health Sciences and Law.

Donors supported units such as the Alumni Association; American Heritage Center; Athletics; Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources; Native American Education, Research and Cultural Center; School of Energy Resources; UW Art Museum; UW Honors College; UW Libraries; and Wyoming Public Media.

Donors also supported student scholarships and more specific programs such as WWAMI, ROTC/AFROTC, the UW cheer team, the animal science judging team, the Wyoming Migration Initiative and the Center for International Human Rights Law and Advocacy.

“My favorite elements of UW Giving Day are that every gift makes a difference, no matter how large or small, and that areas of campus that don’t always feel the limelight can receive support,” says John Small, UW Foundation senior associate vice president for development. “And now with the generosity of the individuals on the Foundation Board, many of those areas on campus may receive double that support.”

Giving Tuesday connects individuals, communities and organizations around the world in one common purpose -- to celebrate and encourage giving. Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration that kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

The tradition began in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation in response to the commercialization of the holiday season. They partnered with Mashable, Skype and Cisco. Later, Microsoft, Sony and many more organizations came on board. That first year, at least $10.1 million was raised and, in 2017, an estimated $274 million was raised -- all in one day.

UW Giving Day is more than just the total money raised, however. It also is about creating a culture of philanthropy, gratitude and giving back -- not only at the university, but also across the state. It’s about bringing together all those who love Wyoming and its university and uniting them behind the common purposes of education, research and service.

Those who wish to participate can go to the UW Giving Day website ( to give online Nov. 27. Giving will be live on the site from midnight to midnight. Gifts made on that day through other channels can be doubled and also will count toward total fundraising; make sure to mention you would like it to apply for UW Giving Day.
