International Bake Sale Nov. 28

Students in the University of Wyoming’s first-year seminar on “Food Culture and Language” will host an international bake sale in the Wyoming Union Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 28-29.

Proceeds will go to the Karma Fund, which is a program that helps raise money for international students to help pay for medical expenses in the case of medical emergencies.

“There will be delicious foods inspired from different countries around the world at the bake sale,” student Bailey Schupp says. “We hope to see you all there.”

Hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday and 1-5 p.m. Thursday.

The sale is the culmination of international conversation partnerships in which the first-year students participated as part of a service learning component of the course. The 17 students were matched with partners representing four different continents and held conversations about culture, government and food traditions.

In previous years, students sold cookbooks that were inspired by the conversations. This year, they opted to cook and bake the recipes instead.

“By giving students the choice of a fundraiser, they have more investment in it,” instructor Mollie Hand says.

The students also selected the Karma Fund as the recipient, as it helps local international students when they are in need.

The ingredients and cooking tools needed for the sale were funded by a UW Service, Leadership and Community Engagement office grant.
