Survey on UW Academic Calendar Open Through March 15

The University of Wyoming committee charged with developing UW’s academic calendar, starting with the 2020-21 school year, is seeking input from students, faculty and staff.

An online survey is now open until Friday, March 15, focused on issues related to the length of the university’s winter break, and the importance and impact of the J-term.

For undergraduate students, the survey may be accessed at https://survey.uwyo.edu/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=l8LH87m3H.

For graduate students, the survey link is https://survey.uwyo.edu/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=m4LH884MH.

The staff survey is at https://survey.uwyo.edu/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=m4LH885MH.

For faculty members, the survey may be accessed at https://survey.uwyo.edu/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=m4LH886MH.

The calendar committee has been charged with recommending academic calendars for each of the three academic years from 2020-21 to 2022-23.

“The academic calendar is a surprisingly important feature of a well-functioning university,” Provost Kate Miller wrote in her charge letter to the committee. “The dates on which the fall and spring semesters begin and end, the choice of spring break week, and the length of the winter break affect our community and our students’ success in many and varied ways.”

The committee, which was charged with consulting with a wide range of stakeholders, will submit its recommendations to the Board of Trustees. The board is scheduled to act on the calendar issue in May.

The chair of the committee is UW Honors College Dean Donal Skinner. Other members are student Bailee Harris, representing the Associated Students of UW; Staff Senate Chair Renée Ballard; Faculty Senate representative John Willford; Senior Associate Registrar Lane Buchanan; Vice President for Student Affairs Sean Blackburn; Deputy Director of Athletics Matt Whisenant; Valorie Lyman, of Albany County School District 1; Aaron Courtney, representing UW Financial Services; Eric Webb, executive director of Residence Life and Dining Services and the Wyoming Union; Emily Vernon, representing the UW Alumni Association; a Laramie County Community College representative; Shannon Polk, of the President’s Office; Ellen Currano, an associate professor of botany; Berit Bangoura, an assistant professor of veterinary sciences; and College of Law Associate Dean Sam Kalen.
