The University of Wyoming’s Nordic ski teams are off to a solid start at the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) national championships, with the women sitting in third place and the men sixth after the first day of the competition in Jackson.

Skiing in the 7.5-kilometer classic race, the Cowgirls recorded two All-America finishes, with Sydney Wiswell, of Jackson, taking seventh and Kat Gruner, of Casper, finishing 10th. Ella DeWolf, of Laramie, took 13th, and Maddy Tinker, of Casper, was 19th.

The Cowgirls have 30 team points, trailing Clarkson University (Postdam, N.Y.) with nine and St. Olaf College (Northfield, Minn.) with 20.

On the men’s side, Trevor Willoughby, of Casper, skied to an All-America finish in ninth place. Others in the top 20 were Silas Goetz, of Lander, 13th, and Matt Williams, of Jackson, 18th.

Vermont’s Castleton University leads the men’s team race with 18 points, but the next five teams are within 12 points of one another. UW’s men have 40 team points.
