The University of Wyoming’s Summer Concert Series continues with a performance by The Littlest Birds Wednesday, June 19. The event is free and open to the public.

The Americana banjo band will perform from 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. on Simpson Plaza. UW Residence Life and Dining Services will provide burgers -- including a veggie option -- pulled pork, hot dogs, sides and drinks for purchase from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Wyoming native Sharon Martinson picked up the banjo first as a young girl while on the front porch of her grandparents’ house, but she didn’t start playing it until nearly the end of her Ph.D. studies. Her ecology field project took her to the West Coast, where she formed the banjo and cello duo of The Littlest Birds.

After touring for nearly seven years, Martinson is reinventing Americana banjo music with a “new-meets-old-sound,” according to the band’s website. She and her band recently recorded a fourth album, “Phoenix Rising.”

Band members are Michael Kirkpatrick, vocals, mandolin and guitar; Roger Sideman, upright bass; and Robert Hansen, fiddle.
