UW Law Practicum to Support Wyoming Entrepreneurs and Startups

Wyoming entrepreneurs will receive legal advising services, and University of Wyoming law students will gain hands-on experience in the field of business startups, as a result of a new UW program starting this fall.

Led by new UW College of Law Professor George Mocsary, the Entrepreneurship and Business Law Practicum will guide law students through the transactional practice of business law while providing much-needed legal services in support of, and in partnership with, UW’s Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE).

The practicum aims to help anyone looking to start a small business in Wyoming or move a business to the state. Students will perform the legal tasks involved in starting a business for actual clients, hypothetical clients or both.

“We want our students to develop competency in business and entrepreneurship advising from a legal standpoint, in addition to providing them with a thorough understanding of law practice management,” Mocsary says. “In the process, Wyoming entrepreneurs will receive valuable legal assistance.”

Legal tasks performed for the group’s clients may include advising on entity choice; drafting and filing organizational documents; assisting with intellectual property, employment and ethical issues; and helping with other transactional matters.

Mocsary, a business law scholar, comes to UW from the Southern Illinois University School of Law, where he served as an assistant professor and directed its Business Boot Camp. Before his work in academia, he practiced corporate and bankruptcy law with a firm in New York City. As a management consultant, he has worked with firms of all sizes, from startups to multinational enterprise. And he’s an experienced entrepreneur himself, starting multiple businesses over his career.

Before earning his law degree from Fordham Law School, he received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Rochester Simon School of Business.

Clients of the Entrepreneurship and Business Law Practicum likely will include those referred to the group by the IIE and UW’s Wyoming Technology Transfer and Research Products Center. But others interested in receiving assistance may email Mocsary directly at gmocsary@uwyo.edu. The practicum will begin seeking clients in September, with client services starting in October.

The Entrepreneurship and Business Law Practicum is one of several new collaborative programs involving the IIE, which serves as the “front door” for access to university human, intellectual and physical resources to support entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship activities across the state.
