A University of Wyoming Department of Botany research scientist has been honored by the British Ecological Society (BES).

UW’s Jane Zelikova and Kelly Ramirez, a postdoctoral researcher at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology, are the recipients of the Equality and Diversity Champion Award. The award recognizes an individual or group who has made innovative contributions to enhancing the practice of equality and diversity in the ecological community.

Zelikova and Ramirez are co-founders of 500 Women Scientists, a grassroots organization that now has more than 20,000 supporters worldwide pledging to build an inclusive, diverse scientific community.

“This award really is an acknowledgement of every single person who has dedicated their time to make science open, inclusive and accessible, work that is so often done by the most marginalized members of our communities and rarely acknowledged,” Zelikova says.

The winners in eight categories will be presented their awards during a ceremony at the society’s annual conference in December. More than 1,200 ecologists from approximately 60 countries will discuss the latest advances in ecological research across the whole discipline.

“Each year, the BES awards prizes to recognize and celebrate the exceptional contributions of individuals to advancing ecology and communicating its importance for society,” says BES President Richard Bardgett. “I am delighted to offer my congratulations to this year’s winners for their exceptional contributions to ecology.”

Founded in 1913, the BES is the oldest ecological society in the world. The society promotes the study of ecology through its six academic journals, conferences, grants, education initiatives and policy work. The society has 6,000 members from more than 120 different countries.
