University of Wyoming Calendar for Sept. 23

These are among the activities scheduled Sept. 23-29 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, Sept. 23, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents Nicole Riner, flutist, and Xin Chang, pianist. The two UW faculty members will perform in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.

Tuesday, Sept. 24, 4 p.m. -- Members of the campus community and the public have an opportunity to weigh in on the search for the next UW president during a listening session in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. Free.

Tuesday, Sept. 24, 5-7:30 p.m. -- The Wyoming Center on Aging, based at UW, will host Healthy U, a health workshop for people managing chronic pain and their friends, family and caregivers. The workshop will be in Ivinson Memorial Hospital’s Summit Room. There is no cost to attend, but space is limited. To register, call (307) 766-2765 or email dduhamel@uwyo.edu.

Tuesday, Sept. 24, 7 p.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium full-dome movie, “Dawn of the Space Age.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204, or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/physics and clicking on “Planetarium Schedule.”

Wednesday, Sept. 25, 12-1:30 p.m. -- UW’s Dementia Support Center will host a presentation on how to become a community gatekeeper to help make Albany County a safe, inclusive, dementia-friendly community. After the presentation, free memory screenings will be provided from the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. This event will be at the Eppson Center for Seniors, located at 1560 N. Third St. in Laramie. Free.

Wednesday, Sept. 25, 6 p.m. -- The award-winning documentary “Hearts of Glass” will be screened at the UW College of Education auditorium. The documentary follows the tumultuous first 15 months of operation of Vertical Harvest of Jackson Hole. This social impact business grows produce year-round in a challenging mountain environment, while providing meaningful employment for people with disabilities. A panel discussion will follow the screening. Free.

Thursday, Sept. 26, 6:30 p.m. -- Cowgirl volleyball vs. University of Nevada-Las Vegas, UniWyo Sports Complex. Tickets prices vary.

Thursday, Sept. 26, 7 p.m. -- StudioWYO hosts Open Mic Night with Mady Lundbald. Sign-ups for performing start at 6:30 p.m. in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Thursday, Sept. 26, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Wind Symphony presents “Intensity” in the Performing Arts concert hall. Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Friday, Sept. 27-Sunday, Sept. 29, all day -- The UW Division of Student Affairs and Cowboy Parents will host Family Weekend for families of current UW students. To register for Family Weekend, go to www.uwyo.edu/parents/family-weekend.

Friday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m. -- The Department of History and American Studies presents Brigitta van Rheinberg, Princeton University Press’ associate director and director of global development. She will discuss “Academic Publishing in the 21st Century” in the College of Business Building, Room 210. Free.

Friday, Sept. 27, noon -- The UW School of Energy Resources Speaker Series presents Susan Hovorka, a sedimentologist at the University of Texas-Austin. She will discuss “Technical Progress Toward Making Carbon Capture and Storage Commercial” in the Energy Innovation Center’s Encana Auditorium. Lunch will be provided. Free.

Friday, Sept. 27, 4 p.m. -- The UW Department of History and American Studies presents Eric Weitz, a distinguished professor of history at the City College of New York. Weitz is this year’s Cone Lecture in History speaker. He will discuss “Re-Thinking Human Rights for the 21st Century” in the Classroom Building, Room 306. Free.

Friday, Sept. 27, 4-5:30 p.m. -- The UW Alumni Association will host a Kickoff Friday event at the Alumni Center in the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center. The event will include light appetizers and a cash bar.

Friday, Sept. 27, 4 p.m. -- Cowgirl soccer vs. San Diego State University, Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. Free.

Friday, Sept. 27, 5 p.m. -- Cowboy and Cowgirl swimming and diving teams host the Brown and Gold Meet, Corbett Building. Free.

Friday, Sept. 27, 5 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents “Big Sing: Your Soul is Song,” the culminating concert of composer Jake Runestad’s UW residency. The concert will take place in the Performing Arts concert hall. Free.

Friday, Sept. 27, 7-11:30 p.m. -- UW and the Laramie Main Street Alliance will host the Downtown Mash-Up. The evening will include live music, activities, games, food and free swag. The event will take place at the Laramie Train Depot and surrounding area. Free.

Friday, Sept. 27, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music’s Faculty Recital Series continues with the Thiem/Bogard Duo, featuring cellist Barbara Thiem, from Colorado State University, and pianist Theresa Bogard, of UW. They will perform in the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.

Friday, Sept. 27, 8 p.m. -- UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium program, “You Are A Star.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Saturday, Sept. 28, 8 a.m. -- As part of Family Weekend, a family 5k fun run/walk will take place at the UW Recreation Fields, northeast of War Memorial Stadium. Registration begins at 7 a.m.

Saturday, Sept. 28, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. -- UW’s Outdoor Program and Service, Leadership and Community Engagement (SLCE) office, along with community partners, will celebrate National Public Lands Day with a day of maintenance and trail building at Vedauwoo Recreation Area. Participants should meet at the northeast corner of Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center. Food will be provided. There is no cost to volunteer, but registration is recommended.
