UW Collegiate Chorale to Present The Spirits Among Us Oct. 31

The University of Wyoming Collegiate Chorale will present a fall concert Thursday, Oct. 31.

In “The Spirits Among Us,” boundaries between mystical worlds collide within the changing of the seasons. Directed by UW Department of Music Professor Nicole Lamartine, the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

Repertory includes Don Macdonald’s “Selene’s Boat,” an ethereal journey of a seafarer whose boat is washed ashore. By harvesting the power of the moonlight, she sets her vessel free with accompaniment of the soothing tones of the tongue drum.

The chorale also will perform Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw’s “Her Beacon Hand Beckons,” which is based loosely on “The New Colossus” poem inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty. Finally, the chorale will perform Romanian composer György Orban’s “Daemon Irrepit Callidus” (“The Devil Speaks Expertly”), a dramatic a cappella work that explores how the devil deceives and seduces the honorable heart. 

The UW Collegiate Chorale is the flagship university choral ensemble in Wyoming. It is composed primarily of undergraduate students, including nonmusic majors. The Collegiate Chorale has performed numerous concerts throughout the state, region and nation, as well as at international venues. Recently, the choir was selected to perform at the 2020 American Choral Directors Association conference in Spokane.

In addition to directing the UW Collegiate Chorale, Lamartine, UW director of choral activities, leads the UW Singing Statesmen and the Happy Jacks. She is a recognized expert in females conducting male choirs. She also teaches conducting and studio voice.
