UW Trustees Select Parking Structure Architect, Wyo Hall Infrastructure Relocation Engineer

December 16, 2019

Two actions to help pave the way for construction of new student housing at the University of Wyoming have been taken by UW’s Board of Trustees.

The board voted last week to authorize a contract with an architectural firm to design a multistory parking structure at the location of UW’s current Ivinson Avenue parking lot. And an engineering firm was selected to design the relocation of utility infrastructure to allow for demolition of Wyoming Hall.

The parking structure will be built to help address the loss of parking spaces due to residence hall and other construction around campus. The firm selected to design the facility, at a cost of up to $100,000, is By Architectural Means, of Cheyenne, in consultation with Anderson Mason Dale Architects, of Denver.

Demolition of Wyo Hall, at the corner of 15th and Willett streets, is scheduled to start in 2020 to clear the way for construction of at least one new residence hall. Pending contract negotiation, the relocation of utility infrastructure currently tied to Wyo Hall will be designed by ST+B Engineering, of Golden, Colo., in consultation with Coffey Engineering, of Laramie, at a cost of up to $400,000.

Replacement of UW’s outdated residence halls is a top construction priority of the university. The Wyoming Legislature has authorized construction of new campus housing at UW, to be financed primarily through issuance of bonds. A legislatively created UW Housing Task Force is working with UW officials to plan and site the new facilities, with a directive that they be constructed west of 15th Street near the Wyoming Union and Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center.

The Board of Trustees previously authorized construction of the parking structure and demolition of Wyo Hall.

In addition to authorizing demolition of the building currently used for UW staff offices, the board previously directed the UW administration to proceed with $1 million in renovations of Hill Hall -- a former residence hall that has been vacant for several years -- to provide office “swing space” and relocate those displaced by the Wyo Hall demolition. Movement of those employees is slated to begin this month.

UW Transit and Parking Services is one of the units moving from Wyo Hall. Beginning Jan. 6, Transit and Parking Services’ main office will be located in the Service Building at the corner of 14th and Lewis streets. Due to the move, the office will be closed Thursday and Friday, Jan. 2-3.
