President Authorizes Two New Personal Days in Light of Labor Day Change

The University of Wyoming’s compressed academic schedule for the fall 2020 semester amid the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated that Labor Day, Sept. 7, be used as an instructional day -- and not a paid holiday for employees.

To help make up for the loss of that holiday, President Ed Seidel has authorized two additional personal days for all UW employees, to be used before the end of this calendar year.

“The change to Labor Day this year is necessary for us to meet the required number of instructional days in the compressed fall semester,” Seidel says, noting that the university has encouraged supervisors to be flexible with staff members and honor vacation requests for Sept. 7 where possible. “These two extra personal days are intended to recognize that inconvenience -- as well as the hard work of our employees during an extremely difficult time.”

Employees will need to follow the standard processes for requesting time off, in collaboration with and approval by supervisors. The extra personal days will be tracked in this manner:

-- For salaried exempt employees, managers will track the days manually -- they will not be added to the HCM system, and they will be used in whole-day increments.

-- For salaried non-exempt employees, 16 hours will added to the Comp Bank and are to be used with normal Comp Bank rules established in the units. The hours will be prorated for part-time workers, if applicable.

-- For hourly non-benefited employees, the payroll office will set up a new time-reporting code; the hours will be prorated to their full-time equivalent status; supervisors will track usage entered by employees into the timekeeping system; and units will establish rules for use.

Under the fall return plan approved by the UW Board of Trustees, the semester has been reduced by one week -- with classes starting Aug. 24 and ending Dec. 4, and with final exams concluding Dec. 11. In order to maintain a 15-week semester, Sept. 7, Oct. 16 and Nov. 23-25 have been converted to instructional days.
