UW College of Engineering and Applied Science to Offer Winternship Opportunity for Students

The University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Applied Science career services team will offer the second annual “Winternship” opportunity during the upcoming 2021 winter break. The deadline to apply is Friday, Oct. 30.

The career services team at the college is a part of the larger career services entity at UW, also known as ACES (Advising, Career and Exploratory Studies), which helps connect students with internships and job alignment after graduation.

Following the New Year’s holiday, engineering and UW College of Business students from all majors can participate in an experiential education program for up to three weeks at some of the region’s top engineering and applied science employers. Experiences range from job shadowing for a day to working with other students to complete a short-term project for the company.

Tyler Grabner, internship coordinator at the College of Engineering and Applied Science’s Susan McCormack Center for Student Success, has led the program’s efforts for the past two years and hopes this year will help grow the program to become an interdisciplinary experience.

“Our goal with this program is for students to utilize their time during winter break, learn new skills and build connections with employers and fellow students,” Grabner says.

As the majority of this year’s experiences may last up to three weeks, EMIT -- one of the companies in the program -- is offering a paid opportunity, and course credit may be achieved if a student’s program allows it. All other experiences are unpaid.

Grabner encourages students who have not yet lined up a summer internship to participate. He says that engineering and applied science internships can be competitive, and it’s important for students seeking work with top employers to get as much experience as possible.

“Students will gain valuable skills in each of these experiences, such as problem-solving and communication skills, as well as time management,” Grabner says.

The following companies are seeking students in the following majors to apply and become part of the opportunity:

-- Avvid Corp.: Electrical, computer science and mechanical engineering majors.

-- CRUX: All engineering and applied science and College of Business majors welcome.

-- Disruptive MedTech: All engineering and applied science majors welcome.

-- EMIT: All engineering and applied science majors welcome.

To apply, students should email their resumes to tgrabner@uwyo.edu.
