UWs WLC Service Program Offers Free Language and Culture Sessions Via Zoom for Spring Semester

Registration for free world language and culture sessions from the University of Wyoming’s World Language and Culture Program (WLCP) will open Feb. 1-7.

Informal sessions in Arabic, Armenian, French, German, Hebrew, Korean, Nepali, Portuguese, Russian, Sinhala, Spanish, Tagalog, Turkish and Uzbek -- along with aspects of culture -- begin Monday, Feb. 7, and end Friday, May 6.

Sessions will be offered via Zoom to accommodate UW staff, students, faculty and community members interested in learning in any of the 21 nonformal world language and culture sessions. Virtual classes generally will be once a week, with times offered throughout the day and early evening.

“Our virtual classes in 2020 allowed us to be inclusive and offer our services to the entire state of Wyoming,” WLCP founder Dilnoza Khasilova says. “We even had some learners join our classes from different states and countries.”

To view the schedule or to register for a class, go to www.uwyo.edu/wlcp/index.html. The schedule also can be found on Facebook.

The WLCP provides opportunities to develop cross-cultural understandings, service learning and teaching, volunteerism, internationalization, and language and culture exposure.

Khasilova launched WLCP in 2014 with the help of UW’s local and international communities, including UW’s graduate students, faculty, staff and undergraduate exchange students who volunteered to teach their target languages and cultures. She is a UW graduate with a doctoral degree in literacy studies, a current Global Engagement Fellow in UW’s Global Engagement Office and supported by UW College of Education Associate Professor Amy Roberts.

The Associated Students of UW, the UW College of Education, the UW Global Engagement Office, and the UW Department of Modern and Classical Languages collaborate with the WLCP to assist with scheduling classrooms, recruiting volunteers and supporting cultural events on campus to celebrate world languages and cultures.
