Computer Scientist Is Speaker for UW School of Computing Seminar Friday

March 31, 2022

Diksha Shukla, a University of Wyoming computer science assistant professor, will discuss “Machine Learning: Security Threats and Mitigation Efforts” as part of UW’s new School of Computing seminar series Friday, April 1, at 11 a.m.

Shukla’s talk can be accessed via Zoom by using ID number 919 5170 1772. The 40-minute presentation will be followed by a discussion.

“With more data, more powerful machines, better algorithms and less motivation for manually engineered features, we are now widely relying on machine learning models,” Shukla says. “More data leads to better-learned models, which leads to more deployments, which leads to more data production.”

With more automated machine learning models, there are now many more unknowns compared to the earlier models, she says. Because of these unknowns in the currently popular models, experts often are not sure whether the model has learned correctly or how the model can be invaded, which brings more security threats, Shukla adds. She also will discuss mitigation efforts against those security threats.
