Derek McDonald, Howard Shear, David Ware and David Wharton

The University of Wyoming Department of Music and the Wyoming Trumpet Guild will offer a day of trumpet master classes, clinics and performances from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, March 26, in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA).

Hosted by David Wharton, a UW Department of Music assistant professor, the Wyoming Trumpet Workshop will feature nationally renowned guest artists Derek McDonald, Howard Shear and David Ware.

Ware, a visiting assistant professor of music at Jackson State University, will kick off the workshop with a trumpet clinic. With more than 20 years of experience in secondary and higher education, Ware offers expertise as a music educator, jazz and classical musician, clinician, private trumpet instructor, and academic and performance coach.

Shear will follow with a mass trumpet ensemble and jazz combo rehearsals, and later will lead a jazz improvisation class. Shear, a jazz trumpet lecturer at California State University-Northridge and a studio musician, has an extensive background performing with various jazz groups, including his own quartet.

After Shear toured the world as lead trumpet player for the Woody Herman Big Band, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a studio musician. For the last 40 years, he has been recording music for movies and television and performing live concerts.

McDonald, an instructor of applied trumpet and coach for the Regis University jazz ensemble and bands, will share his expertise with an orchestral master class. He performs as principal trumpet in the Boulder Chamber Orchestra, the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, the Greeley Philharmonic and Opera Steamboat. He also is a second/associate principal trumpet in the Colorado Ballet Orchestra and the Fort Collins Symphony; and substitute trumpet in the Boulder Philharmonic, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and Opera Colorado.

To wrap up the event, the guest clinicians will lead a free public concert for workshop participants at 3:30 p.m. in the BCPA concert hall.
