University of Wyoming Professor Emeritus Jayne Jenkins is the speaker for the 2022 Buchanan Lecture that honors retired UW President Tom Buchanan.

Jenkins, a longtime faculty member in physical education/teacher education, will discuss “What I Learned Teaching Kindergarten” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, in the Wyoming Union Family Room. The lecture also will be available via WyoCast with the link provided here.

The lecture was established to honor Buchanan, who retired in June 2013 after serving as UW’s 23rd president since 2005. The lecture is delivered annually by one of UW’s most accomplished retiring faculty members.

During her career, Jenkins honed her craft in the public schools of Minnesota and Wyoming before pursuing her advanced degrees in physical education teaching and teacher education at UW and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. UW’s Division of Kinesiology and Health counted itself as extremely fortunate when it successfully recruited her back to Wyoming after she completed her doctoral degree.

Jenkins has received numerous awards for her teaching throughout her career, including the John P. Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award for Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant in 1994; the College of Health Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award in 2003; and the John P. Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award in 2006.

She has received nearly every award given by the Wyoming Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in recognition of her contributions to the profession. She was named a “Person of Influence” in 2018 by veteran and UW graduate Chris Chestnutt and was highlighted in UW’s Pivotal Moments video series, “When It Mattered Most,” for the influence she had on UW graduate Terrance Butler.

The lecture offers members of the university community the opportunity to hear distinguished UW faculty distill a life of inquiry, reflection and service into important guidance for successive generations.

The Office of Academic Affairs sponsors the event, selects the speaker and provides a monetary award. For more information, call the Office of Academic Affairs at (307) 766-6476.
