UW Delays Parking Garage Opening, Lot Closures as Parking Areas Added Along North Campus

Due to issues related to materials availability, the opening of the University of Wyoming’s new parking garage will be delayed until during the spring semester.

But work is proceeding on that project and others to create more than 600 new parking spaces adjacent to UW’s central campus, more than offsetting the future loss of 450 parking spaces due to UW’s residence hall construction project along 15th Street.

The new 375-space Ivinson Parking Garage, which also will include the offices of the UW Police Department (UWPD), will be an access point for buses reaching all areas of campus. Continuous loops will run and, for those who are unable or choose not to walk, it will be a short wait to catch a ride to any part of campus.

The parking garage originally was expected to be completed in December, at which time parking areas east of the Wyoming Union, McWhinnie Hall and Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center were scheduled to be closed as a result of the residence hall project. Because of the materials-related delay of the parking garage’s completion until the spring semester, the closure of those lots will be delayed until that time as well.

UW Transportation Services is working on a revised plan for spring 2023 permit parking for lots west of 15th Street. Communications regarding the plan and the process for registering for parking will be distributed in coming days.

Bus ridership is free for members of the UW community and the public on UWYO Roundup, the university’s transit system. Currently, bus routes end at 6:30 p.m.; plans are in place to extend this service to 10:30 p.m. when the parking garage opens and the lots east of the Wyoming Union, McWhinnie Hall and Half Acre are closed. This is to accommodate evening transportation to core campus.

About 40 spaces of paid public parking will be available in the Ivinson Parking Garage, and the university is working to identify additional areas adjacent to the central campus where short-term paid parking would be available to the public.

UW has completed two additional parking lots along Bradley Street and is adding another parking lot north of the Engineering Education and Research Building at 12th and Bradley in January, adding a total of 227 spaces.

UW also is in the process of creating a new permit parking area where UWPD is now located at the corner of Flint and 15th streets. When the police department moves to the Ivinson Parking Garage, the old building will be demolished to create the new parking area, which is expected to include 80 spaces.
