UW and Partners Celebrate Professional Land Surveyors in March

The University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Physical Sciences is celebrating land surveyors throughout March. The 2023 events are placing professionals throughout Wyoming in K-12 classrooms to present informative science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-based sessions.

“We invite educators and students in grades 4-12 to collaborate with professional land surveyors and geographic information system (GIS) professionals as part of a year-round, statewide effort to raise awareness about these professions while supporting STEM objectives,” says Cindy Jones, the college’s K-14 STEM education outreach manager. “Wyoming’s land surveyors are a fantastic group very willing to engage with Wyoming’s learners.”

This outreach effort is a collaboration among UW, the Professional Land Surveyors of Wyoming and the Wyoming Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors to provide STEM education to Wyoming’s youth.

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan paid tribute to the surveying and mapping professions when he proclaimed the third week in March “National Surveyors Week.” Earlier this month, Gov. Mark Gordon signed a proclamation designating the week of March 6 as Professional Land Surveyors’ Week in Wyoming.

According to Jones, these events are perfect opportunities to introduce students to the many career paths open to professional surveyors.

“Land surveyors continue to make invaluable contributions to the infrastructure and economy of the state of Wyoming, and they dedicate their professional knowledge and skills to the advancement and betterment of human welfare,” Jones says. “Every year during this month, we work to highlight how surveying and accurate location science play a critical role in helping people. We are very grateful to the land surveyors who take time out of their day to share their knowledge and passion about surveying with the K-12 students in Wyoming.”

Educators who would like to schedule a visit with a land surveyor in their classrooms should email Jones at cynthia.jones@uwyo.edu.
