UW Education Abroad Office Selects Advising Fellows

The University of Wyoming Education Abroad Office has selected four advising fellows to receive individual grants of $1,000 for their efforts in supporting curriculum integration within their colleges or schools.

The fellows will work to find ways to help students integrate study, research or internships abroad into their degree programs. Additionally, they will promote education abroad and educate departments on study-abroad opportunities that could work well in conjunction with their curricula.

Three of the four selected are from the College of Health Sciences -- Alisa Siceloff, an assistant lecturer, and Qin “Arthur” Zhu, a professor, are faculty with the Division of Kinesiology and Health; and April French is a senior academic advising professional. The fourth is Ashley Bock, an academic advising professional in the College of Business.

“I am excited to be selected to participate with other advisers in this fellowship opportunity with the Education Abroad Office,” Bock says. “At the College of Business, we value working relationships across the world, as we offer a minor in international business and encourage our students to study abroad. During a student’s time abroad, they’re able to experience new cultures and gain a global perspective while earning credits toward their degree. If we can aid in making this type of experience easier for our students to attain, then why wouldn’t we?”

Siceloff and Zhu will work together to ensure that students in the two majors in the Division of Kinesiology and Health are clear about good options for opportunities abroad.

“I am glad that the curriculum integration project proposed by Alisa and I got selected,” Zhu says. “Our Division of Kinesiology and Health is striving to provide students with broad knowledge and skills that will enable them to impact global health. Therefore, updating the current curriculum by including the great educational resources that can be offered by studying abroad will significantly broaden students’ vision and enrich their learning experience.”

Zhu is the international program coordinator for the Division of Kinesiology and Health and has established a strategic partnership with Shanghai University of Sport. Siceloff will co-lead a course this summer along with Jamie Snyder, associate professor in the Criminal Justice Program, as part of the “UW in Scotland” initiative. The course is titled “Crime and Exercise in Scotland: Exploring the Relationship Between Physical Fitness, Crime and Public Spaces.”

French will work with multiple divisions in the college to consider optimal study-abroad options for students in their majors while also considering options for pre-health students to integrate global opportunities into their educational pathways.

French has lived and worked abroad for many years, having received a Fulbright grant to conduct research in Siberia, Russia.

“I am passionate about ensuring that students get chances to learn abroad while still being able to graduate in a timely fashion, so this felt like a great fit for me,” French says.
