UW in the News

December 7, 2015

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles where UW is making the news.

The names of the three finalists for the UW presidency were announced last week. Several media outlets carried UW’s release, including The Laramie Boomerang, The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, KOWB Radio, The Brookings Register in Brookings, S.D., The Casper Star-Tribune and Wyoming Public Media.

The Laramie Boomerang noted that more than $100 million of UW’s nearly $160 million in supplemental budget requests was slashed last week by Gov. Matt Mead in his budget proposal to the Wyoming Legislature. The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and The Wyoming Tribune Eagle also covered the governor’s budget proposal.

Albany County legislators met with Laramie business leaders to discuss how the budget shortfall will affect Wyoming, including UW, according to The Boomerang. Albany County Sen. Chris Rothfuss says the governor’s proposed budget cuts will hurt UW and Wyoming communities in the long run, he told The Boomerang.

Bloomberg Business reported that Wyoming could receive hundreds of millions of dollars in federal payments intended for mine reclamation over the next decade through a highway bill working its way through Congress. Over the years, the state Legislature has used some of that money to help UW renovate the Arena-Auditorium and to construct a new science building. The Chicago Tribune also carried the news as did The Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

The Hess Digital Rock Physics Laboratory in the UW School of Energy Resources was mentioned in Exploration and Production about technological advances in the oil and gas industry. The article says that UW’s facility is the only laboratory in the world that can study three-phase fluid flow through ultratight rock at the macro, micro and nano scale.

The Powell Tribune reprinted UW’s release noting that Lisa Harsh has been named the Outreach School’s academic coordinator for the Northwest Regional Center, located at Northwest College.

The UW Foundation is working on a plan to put underused money into a larger, intermediate-period investment to maximize returns, according to an Associated Press story picked up by The Billings Gazette and K2 Radio.

Sheridan Media interviewed Sheridan Research and Extension Center Director Brian Mealor about the possibility of developing vineyards at the UW Extension facility.

The new 100,000-square-foot Michael B. Enzi STEM Building will open for the spring semester, according to The Billings Gazette.

KCWY TV covered a recent sage grouse conference in Lander and interviewed Jeff Beck, UW Department of Ecosystem Science and Management assistant professor, about the species’ habitat.

Sheridan Media used the Healthy Pokes program release, including the interview with Director Karen Gaudreault, about the project to help combat youth obesity in the state.

UW received a $600,000 U.S. Department of Energy grant to research separating rare earths valuable to electronics manufacturing out of coal ash, according to The Wyoming Business Report.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed Davona Douglass, UW Research Products Center director, about the number of people who have applied for patents for their inventions and the success they have found.
