UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles where UW is making the news.

UW President Dick McGinity told lawmakers that a $5 million budget cut to the university’s block grant could affect academic programs, The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported. The Billings Gazette also carried the budget story.

The Laramie Boomerang, Wyoming Public Media and WyoFile covered UW presidential candidate Duane Nellis’ visit to campus last week. Nellis is president of Texas Tech University. Fox 34 Television and The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal also noted Nellis’ visit to the UW campus.

Laurie Stenberg Nichols, current provost at South Dakota State University, was the second of three presidential candidates to visit UW last week, reported Wyoming Public Media, WyoFile and KOWB Radio., a leading nursing school search resource, has ranked the UW Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing among its top 50 most affordable online RN to BSN programs in the United States. Programs were ranked based on tuition for students taking only the core nursing classes, tuition for those taking nursing classes and the general education requirements.

UW economist Anne Alexander talked about UW’s economic impact in Laramie County and also statewide, during an interview on KGWN Television.

K2 Radio in Casper and Cheyenne’s KGAB Radio reported that UW Department of Molecular Biology Assistant Professor Daniel Levy received a $792,000 multi-year grant from the American Cancer Society to continue his cancer research work. reprinted UW’s release on Levy’s cancer cell research.

UW’s renovated Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center was featured on the front page of The Laramie Boomerang last week.

SNL Financial interviewed Kipp Coddington, director of the UW Carbon Management Institute, about the future of the coal industry as prices continue to decline. Wyoming Public Radio also interviewed Coddington about the future of carbon storage technologies.

UW chemical engineering student Anthony Richard was interviewed by Inside Energy about his experiments with converting CO2 into methanol. Mark Northam, director of UW’s School of Energy Resources, was quoted in the same story.

The UW Department of Psychology’s online bachelor’s degree is ranked No. 2 on a list compiled by of “Best Online Psychology Degree for 2015-2016,” according to a UW release broadcast by KOWB Radio. The Casper Star-Tribune also published the story.

The Laramie Boomerang interviewed Scott Crawford, UW statistics lecturer, and John Spitler, UW mathematics lecturer, about finals week at UW. Several students also were interviewed.

The Douglas Budget reported that UW economist Anne Alexander discussed the state’s economic forecast during last week’s Wyoming Business Council Board of Directors meeting.

K2 Radio reprinted UW’s release that named the finalists for the position of director of the University of Wyoming at Casper and announced the schedules of the candidates’ public presentations. The Casper Star-Tribune also announced the finalists’ visits.

The Casper Star-Tribune interviewed Tara Righetti, an assistant professor of law at UW, in a story about Wyoming’s efforts to deal with abandoned coal-bed methane wells. The Billings Gazette also carried the story.
