UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

Dozens of media outlets reported on the fatal shooting incident involving UW College of Law graduate Matthew Riehl in Douglas County, Colo. Many of those reports -- including those by the Denver Post, ABC News, Denver’s Fox 31 TV, the Washington Times and the New York Daily News  -- noted the proactive actions by the College of Law and the UW Police Department in response to alarming social media posts by Riehl in October and November.

KGWN Television and the Boomerang were among media outlets reporting that UW is considering reducing tuition for out-of-state students in an effort to increase its enrollment. The Washington Times and U.S. News and World Report also republished the article.

Jonathan Naughton, director of UW’s Wind Energy Research Center, and UW economist Rob Godby were interviewed by the Christian Science Monitor for an article on how coal-rich Wyoming is investing in wind energy.

CU Boulder Today noted that Jacob Goheen, UW zoology and physiology associate professor, was among co-authors of a recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The paper focused on the hypothesis about the factors that govern ecological species.

Reinette Redbird Tendore has been hired as UW’s first Native American program adviser, reported The Casper Star-Tribune. Her office, which is housed in the new Native American Education, Research and Cultural Center, will help recruit and retain Native students.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that the UW Department of Veterinary Sciences is joining a consortium of 20 other universities and private institutions to provide training and research on infectious diseases.

UW’s Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) received a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s EPSCoR office for a five-year microbial ecology project, reported The Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

The Jerusalem Post interviewed vacationing UW student Greg Snyder on his thoughts about President Donald Trump’s controversial decree stating that the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Snyder and friends were in Bethlehem during the Christmas break.

Chad Baldwin, UW associate vice president for communications and marketing, discussed with Sheridan Media the high number of Wyoming students receiving the university’s top scholarship -- the Trustees’ Scholars Award -- including nine from Sheridan County.

Wyoming Public Radio reported that UW is among entities collecting memorabilia in anticipation of Wyoming’s 150th anniversary of granting women the right to vote.

UW lecturer Rachel Watson and three UW students have been visiting K-12 classrooms across the state in an effort to promote UW’s Science Initiative and active-learning concepts in the classroom, a UW release noted that was published by Wyoming Business Report. Three UW officials discussed UW’s Science Initiative at a recent Cheyenne Kiwanis Club luncheon, reported The Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

Wyoming Business Report also noted that UW and its Wyoming Technology Business Center have helped cultivate a new wave of entrepreneurs for the state. The article was first published in The Boomerang.

As Miss Wyoming, UW student Callie Mae Bishop is preparing for the Miss USA competition, reported The Boomerang.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that UW has established a new Transfer Success Center to help with the increased enrollment of transfer students to the university.

Former UW football player Chuck Pagano was fired Sunday as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, media outlets reported, including WyoSports. Pagano coached the Colts for six seasons.

The Oklahoman noted that former UW wrestler Michael Martinez is the recipient of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame’s Medal of Courage Award. After graduating from UW, Martinez, from Pagosa Springs, Colo., was severely burned in a trailer home fire in 2013.
