UW in the News

January 22, 2018

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Laramie Boomerang reported that Gov. Matt Mead requested an amendment adding $4.8 million to UW’s block grant for the coming biennium. The increase is needed because of a budgeting error caught by UW officials for retirement and health insurance costs. The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) also published the report.

The UW Board of Trustees accepted a 10-year housing plan for review but did not approve some specific recommendations, which include the demolition of at least two residence halls, the construction of up to five new, smaller and higher-end residence halls and the renovation of the remaining four halls, noted The Boomerang.

The Boomerang reported that Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit Leader Matthew Kauffman discussed the success of UW’s Migration Initiative at last week’s Board of Trustees meeting.

In an Associated Press article, Kauffman was among scientists discussing the use of motion-sensing cameras to capture wildlife in their habitats for respective research projects. The article was republished in The Seattle Times, The Las Vegas Journal, The New York Post and The New Delhi Times.

The Boomerang reported on a study that indicates UW has the potential to grow but will have to look toward lowering out-of-state tuition, revising its online course prices and reworking its academic management.

Recently retired UW history Professor Phil Roberts discussed with The CS-T the history of the small Hot Springs County community of Kirby.

The Boomerang profiled new UW Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships Debra Hintz.

Bryan Shuman, UW Department of Geology and Geophysics professor, was interviewed by The Buffalo News about predicting lake-effect snows from leaf wax in upstate New York.

Wyoming Public Media reported that new UW research indicates that allowing hunters to kill more female bighorn sheep produces larger trophy rams.

Jane Zelikova, a UW botany postdoctoral research associate, discussed with Earther Magazine the need for more female scientists who should be interviewed by national media.

The Boomerang reported that UW’s planned Science Initiative building cleared a number of hurdles last week, receiving support from both the UW Board of Trustees and the Legislature’s Joint Appropriations Committee.

Trent Loos, a member of President Donald Trump’s Ag Advisory Committee, is the keynote speaker for WESTI Ag Days next month in Worland, according to The Northern Wyoming Daily News.

The Boomerang reported that UW’s efforts to recruit more Native American students are showing positive results.

A state program providing free tuition to veterans and their families who attend UW or a Wyoming community college could be reduced during the Wyoming Legislature’s upcoming budget session, reported The Boomerang.
