UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

Sarah Konrad, deputy director of UW’s Wyoming EPSCoR, was interviewed as a part of a Smithsonian.com story about the science of making snow in a Winter Olympics profile.

Nature quoted Merav Ben-David, UW Department of Zoology and Physiology professor, in an article focusing on why polar bears are wasting away in a changing climate.

A recent report indicated that UW must recruit more out-of-state students to increase enrollment and revenue, according to a Laramie Boomerang article.

The Boomerang reported that, by shifting institutional scholarships to the UW Foundation, the university can put more tuition revenue toward supporting the functions of UW without losing students drawn here by low tuition.

The Wyoming Legislature will discuss several bills this session that impact UW, Board of Trustees member Kermit Brown, of Laramie, told the Boomerang.

AccuWeather reported that Bryan Shuman, a professor at the Department of Geology and Geophysics, and his colleagues have reported that the last decade was warmer than most of the last 11,000 years in North America and Europe. Their research was first published in Nature. The UK’s >Huffington Post edition, The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) and Science Newsline also printed the article.

Dilnoza Khasilova, UW World Language and Culture Program curriculum coordinator, was interviewed by one of Uzbekistan’s leading television stations about Wyoming and UW. The YouTube video, which is in Russian, can be viewed here. The segment includes many photos of Wyoming and the Laramie area.

The CS-T and KGWN TV were among media outlets noting that UW is conducting a sexual misconduct survey among the student population. The survey is intended to assess attitudes and behaviors related to sexual violence on campus.

Jason Thompson, former Associated Students of UW president and current director of diversity and inclusion for the United States Olympic Committee, was profiled in last week’s Boomerang. Thompson was the keynote speaker for Martin Luther King Jr. Days of Dialogue.

Sheridan Media and KGWN TV reprinted UW’s release indicating that Growella, a consumer website that offers finance, career and life advice, ranked the university No. 3 on a list of best-value universities in the nation.

“The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah will perform in a stand-up comedy show on the UW campus March 2, The CS-T and Laramie Live noted.

The Boomerang reported that UW is considering a computer engineering tech degree, which would be offered through UW-Casper and Casper College.

Three UW students from the Wind River Indian Reservation were profiled in The Boomerang for an article on the university’s efforts to recruit and retain more Native students.

The Boomerang featured Craig Cook, who directs UW’s Stable Isotope Facility, a lab that can determine whether an animal was wild or domesticated, the source of water contaminants and a drug’s country of origin.

Tim Slater, Excellence in Higher Education Endowed Chair of Science Education, was interviewed on K2 Television’s “Good Morning Wyoming” program to discuss last week’s blue blood super moon.

>Big Horn Basin Radio Network published, on its website, UW’s release announcing two state brucellosis meetings this month in Worland and Lovell.

The UW Department of Theatre and Dance’s spring semester opening production of “A Bright Room Called Day” was featured in The Boomerang.

Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) interviewed UW farm and ranch management specialist John Hewlett, who said rural lands are at risk in the West because many ranchers face retirement.

UW’s Army ROTC unit mounted color guard rode horses to practice battle tactics developed 150 years ago, The Boomerang reported.

The Boomerang also noted that UW’s Biodiversity Institute is spearheading the Wyoming arm of a multistate effort to learn more about short-eared owls.

The Peking Acrobats kick off UW Presents’ spring semester with their high-flying act this week, reported WPR.

Dan Tinker, UW botany associate professor who researches fire and disease ecology in the Medicine Bow National Forest, told WPR that a forest with plenty of dead trees should not be cause for widespread cutting or thinning of trees.

The Boomerang noted that Bill Mai, UW vice president for administration, will retire at the end of the fiscal year.

UW molecular biology Lecturer Rachel Watson was interviewed in one of her labs by K2 Television to discuss the university’s Science Initiative.

The CS-T interviewed former UW tight end Jacob Hollister, who was a member of the New England Patriots team that played in Sunday’s Super Bowl.
