UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

UW economist Rob Godby was interviewed by The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) about the Annual Energy Outlook report indicating that coal production nationwide will see a downturn in the next few years.

Wyoming Public Radio also interviewed Godby for a story on the largest coal company in the world, Peabody Energy, which is reporting higher earnings and revenues this past year. Peabody owns two coal mines in the Powder River Basin.

UW Law Professor Michael Duff was interviewed by Salon in an article about labor rights advocates who are alarmed by a President Trump administration proposal to centralize more control of the National Labor Relations Board.

The New York Times interviewed Sarah Benson-Amram, UW zoology and physiology assistant professor, for an article, titled “Many Animals Can Count, Some Better Than You.”

UW graduate and former rodeo standout Billie Sutton was featured in The Economist. Sutton, who suffered a career-ending rodeo injury that left him permanently paralyzed from the waist down, is running for South Dakota governor on the Democratic ticket.

Matthew Kauffman, Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit leader, was interviewed for an Associated Press article about the U.S. Department of the Interior’s plan to study migration habits of big-game animals in Western states and develop ways to improve habitat. The article was reprinted in the Jackson Hole News and Guide.

The CS-T profiled Emily Monago, UW’s chief diversity officer. Monago noted the university’s diversity, equity and inclusion plan is on the “homestretch.”

The Gillette News Record reprinted, on its website, UW’s release noting that Carl Frick, department head of mechanical engineering at UW, was part of a winning innovation pitch to the National Football League. Frick is a founder of Impressio, a startup company that aims to redefine energy dissipation in helmets to help prevent injuries.

Sheridan Media reprinted, on its website, UW’s release touting that The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked UW fifth in its “Flagship Institutions With the Highest Percentages of Older Undergraduates” list.

Students taking classes through UW or community colleges could find it easier to take gap years if a House bill passes during the upcoming Wyoming Legislature session, reported The Laramie Boomerang.

American Iron and Steel Institute reported that UW civil and architectural engineering Professor Michael Barker has produced two webinars focusing on steel bridge design.

A paper published by UW researchers -- graduate student Jeremiah Marsicek and Professor Bryan Shuman -- shows that recent temperatures across Europe and North America are at unprecedented highs, reported Wyoming Public Radio.

Professor Chip Kobulnicky told a Sheridan Rotary Club gathering that UW’s Science Initiative is helping make the university one of the premier STEM education institutions in the nation, according to Sheridan Media.

KGWN TV and KOWB Radio posted, on their websites, UW’s release announcing a Feb. 24 DACA symposium.

UW Department of Theatre and Dance Chair Leigh Selting was interviewed by The Boomerang for an article detailing how the department’s latest productions have political overtones.

Sheridan Media reprinted UW’s release indicating that Ramesh Sivanpillai, a UW research scientist, received a 2017 William Thomas Pecora Project Manager Group Award from the International Charter Space and Major Disasters Team.

UW’s new Native American Education, Research and Cultural Center will help Wyoming Native American students improve their college experience, reported Cheyenne’s KGWN TV.

Sheridan Media and The Northern Wyoming Daily News noted that an open meeting is scheduled this week for the UW community and the public to participate in the evaluation of President Laurie Nichols by the UW Board of Trustees.

UW graduate Ken Pomeroy and his popular KenPom.com college basketball analytics site were featured in The Gleaner, part of USA Today’s chain of news websites.

The Boomerang reported that “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah will bring his stand-up comedy act to the UW campus early next month.

The UW Art Museum is noting its spring exhibitions with a reception later this week. Student artists also will be honored, The Boomerang reported.

The CS-T noted that former UW quarterback Josh Allen has been invited to participate in the annual NFL Combine where NFL personnel watch potential draft prospects work out during a series of drills.

Allen’s potential NFL status as a top pick has brought plenty of attention to the Cowboys’ program, head Coach Craig Bohl said. His comments were picked up by USA Today, ESPN and Fox Sports.

The UW men’s and women’s cross country teams received academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for the 2017 season, KGWN TV reported.

Former UW basketball standout Larry Nance Jr. was traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to his home state team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, last week, The CS-T reported. Cavalier Nation also reported the trade.
