UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

Wyoming Public Radio reported that UW’s Salary Policy Task Force discussed with the Board of Trustees that staff are paid below average when compared to peer institutions and relevant industries. Trustees approved a policy change that would allow UW to make market-driven decisions about salary distribution in the future, in addition to employee performance.

UW’s Board of Trustees voted last week to increase tuition by 4 percent, effective in the 2018-19 academic year. Reporting on the story were The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T), KOWB Radio and U.S. News and World Report. Trustees made their case for increasing tuition, reported The Laramie Boomerang.

The Washington Post interviewed Jane Zelikova, a UW botany postdoctoral research associate, for a story showing that children’s gender stereotypes of scientists have decreased over the past five decades in the U.S. Zelikova is the co-founder of 500 Women Scientists, a grassroots organization that advocates for women and equality in science. The Chicago Tribune also published the article.

UW Associate Professor Cliff Riebe was among scientists who discussed the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) World Water Day, which focused on the role North America’s West Coast rivers play in sustaining spawning salmon. The story appeared on the NSF’s website.

Bloomberg News interviewed UW economist Rob Godby on an article noting that environmental groups are asking a Washington, D.C., Circuit Court to force the Interior Department to study the coal leasing program’s climate-change effects.

Godby also was interviewed by Outside Magazine focusing on Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke’s idea of supporting public lands with oil and mining leases.

Sarah Benson-Amram, an assistant professor of zoology and physiology, was interviewed for an article in The Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette focusing on research that shows animals can count.

The CS-T, K2 Radio and Sheridan Media were among media outlets reporting that Casper businessman Dave True has been elected the next president of the UW Board of Trustees.

Jenny Petty, director of UW enrollment marketing, was interviewed by Hashtag Higher Ed to discuss how the university transformed its website, adopted the inbound marketing methodology and began generating prospective student leads via blogging, landing pages and improved campaign measurement.

Rebecca Watts discussed with The Boomerang UW’s Education Initiative, which aims to elevate the College of Education to “national pre-eminence.”

The Oman Daily Observer noted that UW music Associate Professor Nicole Lamartine was the guest conductor for last week’s TAISM (The American International School of Muscat) Festival of Choirs in the Arab country of Oman, on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula.

UW School of Pharmacy Lecturer Antoinette Brown co-chairs Wyoming Rx Abuse Stakeholders, a prescription drug awareness group that leads a campaign to educate Wyoming’s young adults about the risks of abusing painkillers, reported The CS-T.

reported that Gov. Matt Mead signed a bill giving in-state students up to four years after graduating from high school to apply for the Hathaway Scholarship.

Kathleen McCauley, professor of cardiovascular nursing emerita at Penn’s School of Nursing, will be the keynote speaker at UW’s Nursing Scholarship Day April 25, reported The Daily Pennsylvanian.

Sheridan Media reprinted, on its website, UW’s release noting that the UW College of Law’s annual Spence Law Firm Historic Trial this week focuses on a Lewis and Clark Expedition theft incident.

Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow said the Department of Education is working with UW to make sure teachers have the basic skill sets to teach computer science, reported The Jackson Hole News and Guide.

Wyoming Business Report notes that the fifth annual Wyoming Energy Summit will be hosted by UW May 23.

Wyoming philanthropist Marian H. Rochelle, who died earlier this month in Arizona, was remembered in a Boomerang article last week. Rochelle and her late husband, Curt, were major donors to UW. College and University also published the article.

Sweetwater Now published, on its website, UW’s release touting the university’s competitive meat judging team.

UW’s release about its approved budget from the recent legislative session was reprinted by Sheridan Media. The CS-T also published a similar article.

The Powell Tribune reported on Mark Jenkins’ latest adventure that took him and two other Wyoming climbers to the Sinai Peninsula. Jenkins is a field staff writer for National Geographic and a UW School of Politics, Public Affairs and International Studies lecturer.

UW’s media release announcing that the university will launch an outdoor recreation and tourism management degree program this fall was printed on Wyo4News and Sheridan Media’s websites.

Wyo4News also reported that UW’s new Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship will foster entrepreneurship among students, faculty and staff, and across the state, in a university-wide effort.

The family of former UW Trustee Larry Gubbels, who recently passed away, has established a scholarship in his memory, reported The Boomerang.

The Boomerang also reported that the UW Board of Trustees heard a report on the low number of Native American students who receive financial aid, especially through the Hathaway Scholarship program.

Kathy Reichs, a crime fiction writer and forensic anthropologist, will speak at UW next month, Wyoming Business Report noted. UW Libraries sponsors her talk.

Bleacher Report, Cleveland’s News-Herald and Channel 19 News, and The Denver Post were among several national media outlets reporting on former UW quarterback Josh Allen’s Pro Day workout in the Indoor Practice Facility last week.

UW had 54 student-athletes named to the fall 2017 Academic All-Mountain West team, according to The CS-T.
