UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

UW wildlife biologists recently tracked down a lost mule deer doe that made a world-record migration from the Red Desert over the Teton Range in 2016, reported The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T). As noted in a UW release, the trail abruptly disappeared.

UW economist Rob Godby says coal producers, including those in Wyoming, are still attempting to find ways of selling their product to potential money-making markets in China, India, South Korea and Vietnam, noted High Country News. Godby also was interviewed by High Country News for an article, titled “Can coal remain the bedrock of Wyoming’s economy?”

The Laramie Boomerang reported that UW officials were pleased with the outcome of the recent legislative session and the funding granted to the university for the coming biennium. The article also was published in The CS-T.

The Board of Trustees recently completed its review of UW President Laurie Nichols’ performance but does not plan to publicly release specific details, according to The Boomerang and K2 Radio.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch interviewed UW economist Rob Godby in an article about Peabody’s recovery from bankruptcy a year later, saying the company is in better shape after shedding substantial debt that had weighed the company down.

The fastest-growing student population is transfer students, according to a UW report. That student population has grown by more than 12 percent in the past year, reported The Boomerang, U.S. News and World Report and KULR TV, in Billings, Mont.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle quoted Allyson Anderson, a senior lecturer in the UW Department of Computer Science, who said the university is planning efforts to help advance computer science education in K-12 classrooms.

The recent UW study that found hunters, anglers and wildlife viewers spent almost $800 million in Wyoming in 2016 is still making headlines. Publishing the article was Wyoming Fish Explorer.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide noted that UW will soon offer a degree that focuses on tourism. The Boomerang and Wyoming Public Radio had similar reports.

Mike Borowczak, director of UW’s Cybersecurity Education and Research Center and Lab, and Ruben Gamboa, a UW professor of computer science, presented a basic overview of blockchain as part of the Wyoming Technology Business Center’s e2e program, noted Wyoming Business Report.

The Chippewa Valley Post noted that UW Professor Jeff Lockwood was among the speakers at a University of Wisconsin-Stout symposium that addressed free speech and discrimination issues.

The UW release noting that McNair Scholars student Alexandra “Monique” Weaver accepted a postgraduate position at the University of Iowa to conduct genetics research was printed in Uintah Basin Media in Vernal, Utah.

Sheridan Media interviewed UW Associate Vice President for Communications and Marketing Chad Baldwin about the recent legislative session.

UW will host a computer science camp for Wyoming’s educators this summer, a few months after the Legislature mandated students be taught the subject in schools, reported The CS-T.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that Judy Shepard, the mother of slain UW student Matthew Shepard, is the keynote speaker for this week’s Shepard Symposium on Social Justice.

Sheridan Media reprinted UW’s release announcing that UW pharmacy student Rui Guo was awarded a 2017 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad from the China Scholarship Council.

UW will confer its highest award, the honorary doctoral degree, upon Neltje, from Sheridan County, and Maggie Scarlett, of Jackson. The pair will be recognized during UW commencement ceremonies next month, noted Sheridan Media.

The Gillette News Record reported that UW law students Nick Dillinger, of Gillette, and Jason Matzen, from Sheridan, finished second in the Energy Law Negotiation Competition at the South Texas College of Law in Houston.

UW’s release announcing that the university’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 940 was recently named the best small detachment in the Northwest Region for the 2016-17 academic year was published on Oil City’s and Wyo4News’ websites.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that four UW Marcia Dale Aspire Scholars nursing students attended the recent American Nurses Association Quality and Innovation Conference in Florida.

The Boomerang reported that UW officials are attempting to reduce the number of class start times, following a university-wide study that found UW had more than 600 unique start times.

UW law student Debra Bulluck started the university’s first chapter of the National Black Law Students Association, Wyoming Public Radio reported.

The CS-T noted that UW has launched a new smartphone safety app as part of a push to increase campus security. It is one measure taken to reduce sexual assaults on campus.

Former UW assistant basketball Coach Shaun Vandiver will return to the Cowboys next season as an assistant to head Coach Allen Edwards, reported WyoSports.

The Boomerang reported that UW is taking steps to provide students with the information and confidence needed to face down prejudice by scheduling a workshop that teaches students how to confront anti-Semitism and bias.

Mary Humstone, a retired UW research scientist in American studies, compiled a list of Wyoming’s top historical buildings and sites for Archipedia, a website created by the Society of Architectural Historians, noted Sheridan Media.

The CS-T reported that UW sophomore diver Karla Contreras was named a second-team All-American by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America.

The CS-T also reported that UW sophomore diver Scotia Mullin wrote about competing as an openly gay athlete at the university. Mullin’s piece, which first appeared in Outsports, said he found UW a welcoming campus.
