UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Powell Tribune interviewed UW professors Mark Clementz, Marcel Kornfeld and Todd Surovell on the discovery of mammoth bones west of Cody. The UW professors also identified the fossil from photographs provided by The Tribune. Also publishing the article were U.S. News and World Report, San Francisco Chronicle, Big Horn Radio Network, Billings Gazette and Gillette News Record.

UW law Professor Michael Duff, an attorney at the U.S. National Labor Relations Board under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, was quoted in a Bloomberg article focusing on why the agency rescinded a congratulatory note to a New York museum that was earlier honored for its Holocaust work. The nonprofit museum, in the past, has been highly critical of President Trump.

Duff’s knowledge of federal government regulation of internal union affairs was used for an interview in The Guardian that focused on the United Food and Commercial Workers union. Union members accuse leaders of turning a blind eye to sexual misconduct by one of its leaders.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed Dennis and Judy Shepard on the memory of their son, slain UW student Matthew Shepard. This fall marks the 20th anniversary of Matthew Shepard’s death. Former Westboro Baptist Church member Megan Phelps-Roper also was interviewed by Wyoming Public Radio.

UW economist Rob Godby said in Wyoming, lack of transmission lines, a one-of-a-kind wind tax and a perceived hostility to wind development have likely combined to hold back new wind ventures, according to The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T).

Science Magazine was among publications that published UW’s release noting UW’s research on how well greater sage grouse habitat protects other species. The Canadian outdoors website Coyotes, Wolves, Cougars Forever! also published the release.

UW’s MBA Program was listed No. 10 for its online course delivery in a national survey by MBA Central, a ranking site on Google for executive MBA queries.

Wired, a science website, interviewed UW anthropology Professor Todd Surovell for an article focusing on fossil records that reveal a rapid mass-extinction of some of Earth’s super-sized creatures.

The Laramie Boomerang featured UW veterinary sciences Professor Jonathan Fox’s research, which found that mice engineered to have Huntington’s disease have an over-accumulation of iron in their mitochondria.

UW management and marketing Professor Robert Sprague discussed the pros and cons of starting a business in a small city with WalletHub, a website that bills itself as a resource to help consumers make good financial decisions.

The Utah Statesman and Deseret News reported that UW College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Dean Frank Galey has been named Utah State University’s provost. Laramie Live noted that UW will soon begin the process of replacing Galey.

UW administrators are finalizing a salary policy to standardize the way pay raises are awarded for faculty and staff, reported The Boomerang.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW’s Matt Kauffman, Wyoming Migration Initiative director, about the incredible, tracked journey of a mule deer in western Wyoming.

Sheridan Media published, on its website, several UW releases: Jake Goheen, a Department of Zoology and Physiology associate professor, will give the Faculty Senate Speaker Series lecture this week; UW student Andrew Thornton recently won two prestigious awards at the National Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship auditions at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; the Associated Students of UW (ASUW) elections; and the College of Business’s Entrepreneurship Summit.

Wyo4News published, on its website, UW’s release announcing the new members in UW’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Local students were listed in the release.

A UW Extension team that changed how grasshopper outbreaks are treated around the world recently received the 2018 Western Extension Directors Association Award of Excellence for its efforts, reported High Plains Journal.

The Boomerang featured the UW Department of Theatre and Dance’s production of “Six Songs from Ellis,” which tells the stories of some of the 12 million people who came to the United States through Ellis Island.

UW’s student newspaper, The Branding Iron, is seeking more independent status and less administrative control, reported The Boomerang.

Northern Wyoming Daily News noted that Alexandra Mulhall, a current junior in political science, from Worland, was recently elected ASUW vice president.

During last week’s Republican state convention in Laramie, some GOP delegates carried guns on UW property, despite university policy, according to The Boomerang. One person was given a citation by UW police.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW psychology Professor Matt Gray about unreported sexual assaults on the UW campus.

UW atmospheric science Assistant Professor Jeff French was interviewed by The Douglas Budget about the science behind cloud seeding.

KOWB Radio published UW’s release noting that the Native American Education, Research and Cultural Center will host Native wellness training workshops this week for Native students and others in the UW community.

UW’s Engineering Fund for Enrichment Combat Color Fun Run was featured in The Boomerang. The fundraiser supports UW military veterans.

Wyo4News listed Sweetwater County schools that will host local Signing Day events for students who plan to enroll at UW this fall.

WyoSports noted that former UW wrestling standout Bryce Meredith has signed with Pro Wrestling Championships, a top-tier Olympic-style wrestling league for the best wrestlers in the world. Athletes have the opportunity to battle for glory, prizes and sponsorship.

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit is leery of former UW quarterback Josh Allen, as compared to the other quarterbacks expected to be first-round picks in this week’s NFL draft at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, reported WyoSports. Hollywood Life provided an “everything you need to know” glimpse of this week’s NFL draft.

The CS-T reported that the UW wrestling team is among the top 25 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division I All-Academic teams. Senior Bryce Meredith and redshirt freshman Montorie Bridges received individual honors from the NWCA.
