UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

Forbes Magazine published an article detailing how first-round prospects’ NFL draft exposure is worth $50 million and more to various college programs. UW officials estimate that quarterback Josh Allen’s national exposure was worth $47 million to the university.

UW College of Law students in the Defender Aid Program were interviewed by The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) about the case they won before the Wyoming Supreme Court. In that case, the defendant, who was serving a life sentence for murder he committed when he was a teenager, may be released based on a similar case in Alabama.

The CS-T also published an article noting that the UW Board of Trustees swept as much as $140 million that was under the control of various units across campus into a centralized series of accounts last year.

The Cody Enterprise noted that UW archaeology graduate student Adam Guinard was among scientists working to uncover mammoth bones discovered last week at Buffalo Bill Reservoir, west of Cody. The Powell Tribune also updated its original article, noting that some of the specimens are now headed to UW for additional research. Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW Professor Todd Surovell for its own story on the discovery. Montana Untamed published a similar article.

Visits with UW officials and Gov. Matt Mead in the past were instrumental in luring Japan Coal Energy Center and Kawasaki Heavy Industries to Wyoming, reported The CS-T. The company plans to spend $9 million in grant funding researching carbon capture near Gillette.

The Laramie Boomerang interviewed UW Title IX Coordinator Jim Osborn, who said reports to his office doubled between 2016 and 2017, but the increase does not necessarily reflect higher numbers of sexual assault, harassment or discrimination. The article also was picked up by The Washington Times.

UW student organization MEChA was mentioned in WyoFile as among the major sponsors of the WyoSayNo Coalition, which opposes a private detention facility in Evanston that would house illegal immigrants.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle interviewed Mike Samp, UW chief of police, who defended how he handled Republican Party members defying a policy against having guns on university property at the recent Wyoming Republican Party convention at the UW Conference Center. The Kansas City Star republished the article. Gubernatorial candidate Taylor Haynes told KGAB Radio that the weapons ban is unconstitutional.

The UW Student Chapter of Professional Land Managers is working on a project to remove old racist covenants from titles in multiple subdivisions in Cheyenne, reported KGWN TV.

Sheridan Media reported that representatives of UW’s Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer offices visited both Sheridan College and Gillette College last week to explain entrepreneurship programs to local residents.

UW Native American students, faculty and staff recently participated in Native Wellness Institute training workshops over two days on campus, reported Wyoming Public Radio.

A rare tapir fossil discovered near Kemmerer may be the first of its kind and is the largest mammal found to date in the 50 million-year-old Green River Formation, reported Sweetwater Now.

Finalists for the position of vice president for administration were on the UW campus last week to give public presentations, Laramie Live reported.
