UW in the News

May 21, 2018

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

UW Assistant Professor Anna Chalfoun’s research questioning some of the specific assumptions that went into the sage grouse “umbrella species” idea was cited in a Yale Environment 360 article.

The Newcastle Letter Journal reported on UW President Laurie Nichols’ first visit to that community. Nichols said UW’s focus is to enroll more Wyoming students at the university.

A UW study was cited in a Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) article focusing on conservation groups and sportsmen who want federal land managers to keep oil and gas leases out of a southwest Wyoming mule deer migration corridor. They asked for a delay until a regional plan exists to mitigate energy development.

The CS-T interviewed Jonathan Naughton, director of UW’s Wind Energy Research Center, who told the newspaper that, during the next five to seven years, the state can expect as much as 5,000 megawatts of new wind power could be generated. That is three times the amount of power potential in Wyoming’s current fleet of wind projects, Naughton said.

UW’s School of Pharmacy and Howard University are engaging in a unique exchange program, noted The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. The Health Equity Leadership Program will challenge students from both institutions to learn “outside of their comfort zones” about both urban and rural health care access and equity issues.

UW’s Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute recently announced that about $2.2 million of research is planned regarding oil and gas recovery in Wyoming, The CS-T reported.

WyoFile interviewed Jacquelyn Bridgeman, a UW endowed professor of law and interim director of the School of Culture, Gender and Social Justice. She commented on Eastern Wyoming College’s proposed transgender protection policy and some of the contradictions made by opponents of the policy.

UW’s release announcing that former Temple University President Neil Theobald has been selected as vice president for finance and administration was published on Laramie Live’s website. The Philadelphia Inquirer published a similar article.

The Boomerang noted that UW has not committed to contributing $1 million to the purchase of land near Pilot Hill, but stipulated that any future contribution would mean that UW could develop wells on the purchase area.

UW officials will begin planning potential tuition increases further in advance to make it easier for prospective students and their families to plan for college by offering a longer view of rising tuition costs, The Boomerang reported. The Sacramento Bee published an Associated Press version of the story.

The CS-T reported that a summer exhibition series now on display at UW’s American Heritage Center will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Laramie with collections depicting the city’s life and history.

UW officials are already discussing potential issues to be considered during the 2019 legislative session, The Boomerang noted.

The Boomerang interviewed Robert Aylward, UW vice president for information technology, on how the university’s cybersecurity system protects against hackers and viral attacks from outside sources. In a related Boomerang article, Aylward discussed the need to hire more IT personnel.

UW’s release announcing the Wyoming Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Symposium later this month was published by Geospatial World.

Daily Nurse published UW’s release noting that Holly Miller, director of the Basic BSN and BRAND nursing programs at the UW Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing, received the UW College of Health Sciences Outstanding Career Achievement Award.

The UW Department of Theatre and Dance’s production of “Six Songs from Ellis” was previewed in The Scottsbluff Star Herald. The production was staged at Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington. Sweetwater Now added that the production also was staged at Western Wyoming Community College.

The Sheridan Press noted that a local student was among UW’s Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing students honored during the school’s annual Nursing Convocation ceremony.

Among the UW media releases published on Sheridan Media’s website were Jacqueline Leonard receiving a Fulbright Canada Research Chair in STEM Education award; and Holly Miller receiving the UW College of Health Sciences Outstanding Career Achievement Award.
