UW in the News

May 29, 2018

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

Wyoming Business Report noted that the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy awarded nearly $10 million to UW for a commercial-scale carbon storage complex feasibility study at the Dry Fork Station near Gillette.

UW law Professor Michael Duff was quoted by Bloomberg News in an article focusing on the United Auto Workers union alleging that electric-car maker Elon Musk violated the National Labor Relations Act by threatening to take away employee stock options in retaliation for engaging in protected union activity.

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reported that Kipp Coddington, director of the Carbon Management Institute at UW’s School of Energy Resources, successfully stumped for Sen. John Barrasso’s carbon capture bill that received bipartisan support. The bill will help refashion existing laws to support capturing carbon dioxide for use in other products.

Leaders of UW’s Board of Trustees, administration and Faculty Senate have agreed on changes to the school’s regulations, which had previously drawn criticism from UW’s faculty, reported The CS-T. The Laramie Boomerang and Wyoming Public Radio published similar articles on their websites.

The CS-T reported that, just a year after $42 million in budget cuts, UW will hire 35 new faculty members for the fall semester. UW saw more faculty take buyout packages last year than expected.

UW’s Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department are launching a study at the 500-megawatt TB Flats wind turbine development project north of Laramie to measure wind’s impact on pronghorn from construction to operation, reported The CS-T.

The Northern Wyoming Daily News interviewed UW President Laurie Nichols on her return trip to Worland. Nichols reflected on her accomplishments during the two years since taking over as the university’s president.

Outdoor Design Source reported that UW writer-in-residence Mark Jenkins, a National Geographic writer, ventured into Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in southeast Alaska for his latest outdoor adventure.

Kyle Moore, associate vice provost for enrollment management, told Wyoming Public Radio that UW will implement a new block schedule with standardized start times that students should find easier to sequence classes without conflict and complete their degrees.

The Boomerang reported that former Temple University President Neil Theobald will begin duties July 1 as UW’s new vice president for finance and administration.

UW’s School of Energy Resources was among sponsors of the Wyoming Energy Summit last week in Laramie, Wyoming Business Report noted.

Feedstuffs and Drover’s Magazine, both agriculture publications, published UW’s release noting that university researchers found that cattle fed high oral doses of chronic wasting disease-infected brain material or kept in heavily prion-contaminated facilities for 10 years showed no neurological signs of the disease.

Among UW’s releases published on Sheridan Media’s website were Assistant Professor Dana Robertson, executive director of UW’s Literacy Research Center and Clinic, being part of a team of 28 literacy experts that recently wrote updated standards for preparing literacy professionals; UW’s collaboration with Freie Universität Berlin that will expand research and student exchange between the two universities; UW President Laurie Nichols will be a special guest at the sixth annual Forage Field Day near Lingle later next month; UW’s Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute is part of a $2.2 million oil and gas recovery project in Wyoming; and the Wyoming Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Symposium at UW this week.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide reported that UW’s Center on Aging, in partnership with the Teton County Library, will host a cognitive health speaker series at St. John’s Medical Center this summer.

The Associated Students of UW will contribute up to $350,000 for a visioning study of the Wyoming Union that will determine the current and future needs of the building, reported The Boomerang.

The CS-T previewed the “Sequencing Through Time and Place: The Carissa Mine” exhibition now on display in the UW Visual Arts Building gallery.

The public relations website JD Supra noted that UW’s School of Energy Resources is among partners in collaborative efforts that are helping Wyoming become a force for change in the energy industry, not only nationally, but worldwide.
