UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

ABC News interviewed former UW rodeo bronc rider Billie Sutton, who is the Democratic candidate for South Dakota governor. He will face Republican challenger Kristi Noem in November’s general election. After finishing his UW career, Sutton suffered a paralyzing injury during a pro rodeo event. He is a current South Dakota state senator.

Researchers, led by UW’s Jeff Clune, have developed an artificial intelligence system that can automatically identify, count and describe wild animals using photographs collected by "camera traps,” also called motion-sensor cameras, according to The Times of India, Environmental News Network and Android Headlines. The study first appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Click here to read UW’s release.

UW College of Law Professor Michael Duff was quoted by Bloomberg News in a story about the potential for a Frontier Airlines pilots’ strike. He notes that airlines are in a much poorer position to weather work stoppages, given consolidation and competition.

Duff also was quoted by Law 360 --- the law news division of LexisNexis -- regarding whether state laws mandating that employers implement individual retirement accounts are pre-empted by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) interviewed Kyle Moore, UW associate vice provost for enrollment, about the continued upswing in student enrollment heading into the fall semester. U.S. News and World Report, KGWN TV and KULR TV in Billings, Mont., also published the article.

UW researchers are shedding light on a rare aquatic beetle native only to central Wyoming, according to Science Daily and Science Magazine, which published UW’s release. Lusha Tronstad, lead invertebrate zoologist with the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database, led the study.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that UW has seen a change in leadership, replacing five of seven vice presidents in three years. Diverse, the website covering issues in higher education, also published the article.

UW College of Law Professor Noah Novogrodsky helped draft a study how immigrants contribute to the Teton County economy, according to The Jackson Hole News and Guide. The study also asked how the community could enhance those contributions by making immigrants feel more welcome.

Outdoor News reported that UW researchers have detected the fungus that causes white-nose syndrome in bats, the first such finding in the state. The discovery was made at Fort Laramie National Historic Site in Goshen County.

Jackson’s Maggie Scarlett received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree for her work creating and expanding museum and library collections, according to The Jackson Hole News and Guide.

Wyo 4News published UW’s release announcing that UW’s School of Pharmacy is ranked among the top schools in the nation for the percentage of students placed in post-graduation residency positions.

Sheridan Media published the following UW releases: Lusha Tronstad’s rare aquatic beetle study; senior Emily Wood’s scholarship to study in Indonesia; the latest Wyoming Conservation Corps projects; UW’s and the state’s blockchain efforts; UW’s Drug Utilization Review Services contract renewal; the Wyoming Conservation Corps won a national award for its Pole Mountain Trail project.

The Boomerang reported that UW’s management will go paperless, and time reporting and hiring processes will now be done digitally.

Cole Ehmke, UW Extension specialist in agricultural entrepreneurship and personal finance, was interviewed by Sheridan Media for a class he led on value-added food ventures in Sheridan.

Wyo 4News reported that Wyoming first lady Carol Mead and the UW Literacy Research Center and Clinic are seeking applications for the third annual Wyoming First Lady’s Leaders in Literacy Award to be presented this fall.

Former UW basketball player Alysia Kraft, of Encampment, and her band, Patti Fiasco, will open for Blondie at the Bohemian Nights New West Fest in Fort Collins, Colo., in August, reported Laramie Live.

The CS-T reported that former UW receiver Marcus Harris and Coach Dennis Erickson have been named to the College Football Hall of Fame ballot. Winners will be selected in January.

Former UW wrestler Michael Martinez received the Medal of Courage Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame during the 42nd annual Honors Banquet at Oklahoma State University, reported InterMat.

The UW volleyball team will go on a 12-day European tour beginning this week visiting Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Italy, according to Wyo Sports.
