UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

UW economist Rob Godby commented to The Wyoming Tribune Eagle on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision approving taxes on internet sales, which many view as a win for states, such as Wyoming, and brick-and-mortar stores.

Sheridan Media republished a Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) article where Godby said that the Chinese tariffs probably would not make a difference for Wyoming coal producers because the U.S. isn’t among the major suppliers of coal to other countries.

Godby also was quoted in a lengthy Desert Sun article on developer Philip Anschutz, who wants to build America’s biggest wind farm in Carbon County. The project would send the electricity to California, but politics could get in the way, according to Godby and others interviewed for the article.

ScienceDaily published UW’s release about a paper written by Sarah Benson-Amram, Lisa Barrett and Lauren Stanton, of UW’s Animal Behavior and Cognition Lab, that examines whether smarter animals might be better at learning to live in cities, but may come into more conflict with humans.

The New Yorker cited Darius Clark Monroe’s documentary “Black 14,” the saga of the 14 dismissed UW football players by Coach Lloyd Eaton 50 years ago, as one of the top short films at this year’s New York Film Festival. His documentary also will be shown in another film festival.

A paper written by UW Associate Professor Jeff Clune and others that reports how an artificial intelligence technique can automatically identify, count and describe animals in their natural habitats continues to be in the news. The International Society of Bionic Engineering published UW’s release. “Click,” the BBC’s flagship technology program, also interviewed Clune.

The Billings Gazette reported that UW’s Matt Kauffman, of the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, is one of the co-authors of a paper that indicates that Yellowstone National Park’s elk may not fear wolves as much as some scientists once contended.

UW’s release, announcing that a team from the UW Family Medicine Residency clinic in Cheyenne and two School of Pharmacy instructors received a grant to launch a lifestyle change program aimed at preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes in Wyoming, was published by Sweetwater Now.

KGWN TV published a UW Extension release about “Wyoming Tax Facts,” a free, self-paced course that provides an easy-to-read introduction to taxation in the state.

The first UW pep rally in Casper last week, featuring UW President Laurie Nichols, coaches and Western Thunder Marching Band, was featured in The CS-T.

The Laramie Boomerang featured UW Department of Theatre and Dance’s “Baby with the Bathwater,” which stages this week. The production is part of the Snowy Range Summer Theatre.

The Wyoming Department of Education is taking public comment on the Hathaway Scholarship, which is available for in-state students attending UW or community colleges, following changes made to the program during the recent legislative session, reported Wyoming Public Radio (WPR).

WPR also noted the second PrideFest, sponsored, in part, by UW’s Shepard Symposium, later this month. The event concludes with a candlelight vigil noting the 20th anniversary of Matthew Shepard’s death.

UW Associate Professor Sean McCrea was part of a research team working on practical ways to help people stick to health-related goals, such as specifically prescribed regimens for medical ailments that require significant lifestyle changes, according to Medical Xpress.

WyoSports noted that UW sophomore runner Chris Henry, from Laramie, was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America men’s track and field/cross country third team.
