UW in the News

July 30, 2018

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

Bloomberg quoted UW law Professor Michael Duff who said Republican appointees could “shift labor law violently to the right” secure in the knowledge that a Supreme Court majority with Brett Kavanaugh would uphold them if he’s appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Jason Shogren, a UW professor of economics, was interviewed by The Christian Science Monitor on proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act. At the heart of the debate is how to balance the needs of people and nature.

Time magazine also interviewed Shogren for an article that touted the economic benefits of the Endangered Species Act. The article stated that the act generates more than $1 trillion yearly.

Temple Stoellinger, a UW assistant law professor, told Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) that a forgotten section of the Endangered Species Act can give states more local control.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide reported that a UW economic analysis found that the regional economy will likely suffer if wildlife managers continue to feed elk in the event of a fast-approaching deadly disease, such as chronic wasting disease.

UW Black 14 team member John Griffin spoke with WPR about his and his teammates’ experiences 50 years ago when they were kicked off the Cowboys football team by Coach Lloyd Eaton.

WPR also interviewed UW economist Rob Godby who discussed Wyoming’s preparedness if a recession hits the country. He said the state is at the top of the business cycle with good growth.

Godby also was interviewed by Bankrate.com for an article, titled “Is a state with no income tax better or worse?”

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) interviewed Matt Kauffman, leader of the Wyoming Migration Initiative at UW, about a deer that again walked almost 250 miles from southern Wyoming to Idaho, with researchers saying it was no fluke since it’s now happened twice. It is the longest migration route ever recorded.

UW’s release detailing the work of the university’s Wyoming Pathways from Prison personnel teaching philosophy courses to prison inmates in the state was published by Sweetwater Now.

Sheridan Media interviewed UW Associate Vice President for Communications and Marketing Chad Baldwin about UW’s new campaign slogan, “The World Needs More Cowboys,” and also published UW’s release about its $20 million microbial grant research projects from the National Science Foundation.

Wyo4News published several UW releases: Alexander Heffner, the host of PBS’s “The Open Mind,” will speak at a civil discourse program at UW this fall; and that registrations are now open for developers for a WyoHackathon conference at UW. Wyo4News also noted that the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit is assisting with a fawn survival study in southwest Wyoming; local students participated in UW’s Summer Research Apprentice Program; and UW is working to position itself as a national and global leader in biodiversity science.

The Powell Tribune reported on annual crop developments during UW Extension’s field day last week at the university’s Powell Research and Extension Center. UW President Laurie Nichols addressed local producers during the event.

Christine Porter, a UW kinesiology and health associate professor, was interviewed by The CS-T for a story about “food deserts,” defined as areas devoid of fresh and healthy food. Several small Wyoming communities do not have grocery stores, making long trips for people to travel for groceries.

ARTnews noted that Sharon Louden will have an art installation of her work this fall at the UW Art Museum.

WyoSports noted that former UW standout Josh Allen signed his rookie contract (four years) with the Buffalo Bills last week.
