UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

Carbon technology could support 2,600 jobs in Wyoming, according to a new report from American Jobs Project. The Casper Star-Tribune interviewed UW economist Rob Godby for the article.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that the UW Board of Trustees approved an approximately $19 million supplemental budget request for the 2019-20 fiscal year. U.S. News and World Report and K2 Radio also published a similar article.

Wyo4News published UW’s releases about Jerod Merkle being selected to fill the Knobloch Professorship in Migration Ecology and Conservation; the high school student Health Care Careers Summer Camp; and two UW atmospheric science graduates accepting faculty positions in China.

Wyoming Business Report printed UW’s release on the kickoff for the third year of the Casper Start-Up Challenge.

UW zoology and physiology Professor David McDonald told Science News that researchers should avoid using the word “promiscuity” altogether for an article, titled “In the animal kingdom, what does it mean to be promiscuous?” He says it’s a bad word to use because “it’s such a loaded term.”

Entertainment Focus and Pop Culture noted that UW will be the second stop in the Brothers Osborne’s world tour. The Country Music Association and American Country Music award-winning duo will perform in the Arena-Auditorium Aug. 31.

Nominations for the Daniels Fund Ethical Leadership Award, a joint venture among UW and other entities, are now being accepted, according to a UW release published on Sheridan Media’s website. Other UW releases published on the radio station’s website were a comprehensive study on the effects that wildfire smoke has on the weather, the climate and air quality; Bart Geerts’ grant to study mixed-phase convective clouds in the marine boundary layer in the Arctic; and UW’s parking and transit study.

K2 Radio, Chronicle of Philanthropy and The Miami Herald reported that UW received a $2.5 million gift from alumnus David Le Norman that will support the university’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide previewed the Wyoming Festival at Grand Teton National Park. UW faculty members helped with the festival.

UW’s King Air research aircraft is being used in a study of the effects of wildfire smoke on the environment, reported the Idaho Press in Nampa, Idaho.
