UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reported that the UW Board of Trustees approved a 4 percent tuition increase for most students in the 2019-20 academic year. U.S. News and World Report and Billings’ KULR 8 Television also published the article.

UW President Laurie Nichols and UW Vice President for Student Affairs Sean Blackburn discussed revamping the university’s dining plans for students at the UW Board of Trustees Budget Committee meeting last week, according to The Laramie Boomerang.

The Boomerang reported that UW’s freshman class is likely to be a record-breaking class. The official enrollment numbers will be generated Sept. 19, the 15th day of classes. The Houston Chronicle carried a similar article.

Laramie, home of UW, was one of 35 communities named in an article, titled “The Most Charming College Towns to Visit This Fall,” by Bob Vila, known as the host of the television program, “This Old House.” Laramie was the only Mountain West Conference hometown mentioned on the list.

The Laramie Boomerang noted that several blockchain companies pledged commitments to the state after the recent WyoHackathon. The event was billed by entrepreneurs as a “thank you” to the state for the five blockchain-related bills the Legislature passed to spur a new software sector in the state. Crypto Briefing, Bitcoin Exchange Guide and Bitcoin News also reported on the event.

UW economist Chuck Mason told Wyoming Public Radio that mineral companies in Wyoming likely won’t be affected by Bank of the West’s decision to stop financing, distributing or marketing activities within coal, oil or gas unless the companies focus on clean energy.

Wyoming Business Report and Sheridan Media published UW’s release about UW researcher Michael Dillon studying how bees overcome harsh winter conditions to reproduce in the spring. The research is funded by an overall $5.68 million National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) grant. Of that amount, UW received $2.37 million.

Wyo4News reported that UW researchers are planning a two-day mule deer capture near Superior later this month as part of the Red Desert to Hoback Migration Project.

The Boomerang profiled UW’s new Marna M. Kuehne Foundation Veterans Services Center, which was dedicated last week.

Wyoming Public Radio reported on the first Native American welcome orientation session held in the Native American Education, Research and Cultural Center.

Wyoming Public Radio featured “Locust: The Opera,” a chamber opera written by UW faculty members Jeff Lockwood and Anne Guzzo. Lockwood, a professor of natural sciences and humanities, wrote the lyrics, and Guzzo, an associate professor of music, composed the score.

Mark Jenkins, a UW lecturer and National Geographic field staff writer, will share stories and photographs from his expedition to Egypt last fall as part of UW’s “World to Wyoming Series with Mark Jenkins,” The CS-T reported. Jenkins will visit towns in the southern and central parts of the state this month.

UW’s release on “DNA and the Pursuit of Justice,” a panel discussion about wrongful convictions, was published by Wyo4News. The online news outlet also published UW’s Startup Weekend Laramie release.

KGWN Television published UW’s release announcing that the World Language and Culture Program is offering 13 different language courses this fall for the campus and local communities.

Ali Nejadmalayeri, the John A. Guthrie Endowed Chair in Banking and Financial Services, discussed the best balance transfer credit cards with WalletHub.

Sweetwater NOW published UW’s release noting that Mike Brotherton, a UW physics and astronomy professor, is among researchers studying quasars. Scientists were awarded a five-year National Science Foundation grant for $800,000 for their research.

The Boomerang previewed last week’s Downtown Mash Up, an event designed to bring UW students and the Laramie community together. 

UW professors Jeanne Holland, Joy Landeira and Caskey Russell presented lectures about Ernest Hemingway during UW’s Saturday University in Sheridan last week, according to Sheridan Media.
