State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Laramie Boomerang reported that UW President Laurie Nichols supports reconvening a task force that was responsible with deciding on how to distribute $5.5 million this past fiscal year in added compensation for existing UW employees.

UW and the city of Laramie are commemorating Matthew Shepard’s death with a series of events, including a performance of “Considering Matthew Shepard” by the Grammy-winning choral group Conspirare, according to Houston’s Out Smart Magazine.

The Boomerang featured UW Olympic ice skater Adam Rippon, who was on campus and in the Laramie community conducting interviews for ABC’s “Nightline” as part of the Matthew Shepard 20th Memorial events.

Space Ref featured UW researchers’ collaborative research into how forest fire smoke is affecting clouds. The research is part of a NASA grant.

UW’s research into tracking the long migration journey of Deer 255 in western Wyoming was featured in Adventure Journal.

The UW Alumni Association is seeking to reduce the size of its board, which would reduce operational costs and staff time, reported The Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

The Boomerang reported that UW President Laurie Nichols discussed 2018 enrollment numbers and the 2017 annual report with the Laramie City Council last week.

Richard Horner, UW School of Energy Resources deputy director, discussed with The Gillette News Record the area’s new efforts to make Powder River Basin coal into other valuable products.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle noted that UW President Laurie Nichols is the keynote speaker for Laramie County Community College’s African heritage celebration later this month.

A rare fossil of the largest known mammal discovered in the Fossil Butte Member of the 50 million-year-old Green River Formation was on display at an open house hosted by the Wyoming State Geological Survey at UW, reported Laramie Live.

Reader’s Digest noted that Wyoming’s “dinosaur tour,” including UW’s Geological Museum, is among the 12 best dinosaur museums in the world.

Bioengineer noted that Shane Murphy, a UW atmospheric science assistant professor, is among collaborators in a wildfire emissions study.

UW’s release on UW botany Professor Greg Brown’s innovative research -- using drones to photograph plants above treetops in Costa Rica -- was published by Sheridan Media. Other UW releases published on the website were collaborative research in Russia by Kevin Chamberlain, a member of UW’s Department of Geology and Geophysics faculty; and UW’s involvement with the Wyoming Latina Youth Conference.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide interviewed UW Professor Jeff Lockwood about his “Locust: The Opera,” co-written by UW musician Anne Guzzo. The opera made its premiere last weekend in Jackson.

UW’s Matt Kauffman was interviewed by Firenews for an article on how wildlife learn to migrate, which has been difficult for some species because of their changing habitat. Kauffman is a wildlife researcher with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at UW.

Fishing Wire noted that the Wyoming Game and Fish Department hosted a celebration of hunting and fishing with an informational booth at last week’s Cowboy football game on the UW campus.

A deadline of Thursday, Nov. 1, has been set for nominations for 2019 UW honorary degrees, according to a UW release published on Wyo4News’ website. Another UW release published on the website was UW’s student survey that indicated high overall satisfaction with the university.

Hits 106, in Laramie, announced a candlelight vigil celebrating the life of Matthew Shepard on the 20th observance of his death. The vigil will be near the student memorial on Prexy’s Pasture Friday, Oct. 12.

The Boomerang reported that UW officials are restarting a search for the dean of the College of Health Sciences, more than a year after former Dean Joe Steiner retired.

UW’s release announcing a special edition of Saturday University commemorating the murder of Matthew Shepard, scheduled Saturday, Oct. 6, at UW, was published on Oil City’s website. Saturday University is a half day of college lectures and discussion offered by UW.
