UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Laramie Boomerang reported that UW administrators revealed their preferences of where to build residence halls housing 2,000 students during a legislative task force meeting last week. The Boomerang also reported that the legislative task force charged with overhauling residence halls met for the final time but did not produce a bill to finance construction for the buildings in 2019.

Slain UW student Matthew Shepard’s collection of papers and personal objects will be donated to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, according to MSN News.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that the Joint Appropriations Committee will draft a bill that is expected to lead UW to privatize the operations of its two family medical clinics in Cheyenne and Casper.

Professor Jeff Lockwood wrote a column for Entomology Today about his collaboration with UW colleagues on their locust opera. The article is titled “Entomological Storytelling: Why We Wrote an Opera About Locusts (Really!).”

The Powell Tribune reported that Northwest College and UW are teaming up to offer a four-year degree at the Powell-based community college.

Among the UW releases published on Sheridan Media’s website were the Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research Conference Roundup last week; UW partnering with Ramsey Education’s “Foundations in Personal Finance” curriculum to help Wyoming students develop good personal finance habits; the UW College of Health Sciences honoring six of its alumni during last week’s Homecoming; UW’s Master of Science in Health Services Administration Program, offered through UW’s School of Pharmacy, producing its first group of graduates; and 10 innovative businesses formed by UW graduate students being finalists in the Fisher Innovation Launchpad.

Laramie Live published UW’s release noting that all four gubernatorial candidates will debate at the College of Arts and Sciences auditorium this week.

The Boomerang also reported on these UW news articles: UW trustees recently approving designs for a new energy plant; the UW-sponsored Wyoming Latina Youth Conference; and a preview of the UW Symphony Orchestra concert this week.

UW administrators may ask the Board of Trustees to revise the school’s housing policy to require all incoming freshmen living more than 30 miles outside of Laramie to live on campus, noted The Boomerang.

The Akron Beacon Journal noted that former UW standout Larry Nance Jr. signed a $45 million, five-year extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The UW men’s cross country team entered the national rankings for the first time in program history last week, according to WyoSports. The Cowboys are ranked 13th nationally.
