UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent articles:

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that Gov. Matt Mead presented his supplementary budget, including UW’s $19 million request, to the Legislature’s Joint Appropriations Committee. The Laramie Boomerang noted that the state Legislature’s Joint Appropriations Committee scrutinized much of UW’s budget requests.

Emily Monago, UW’s chief diversity officer, and Angela Jaime, director of UW’s Native American and Indigenous Studies program, led a session to share best practices for confronting prejudice and supporting marginalized students on campus, reported Wyoming Public Radio .

The Denver Post reported that a plan to construct up to 600 miles of temporary roads to log, thin and set prescribed burns from the Colorado-Wyoming border north across the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges will help reduce wildfires. UW Associate Professor Daniel Tinker commented in the article first published in The Washington Post.

UW College of Law Professor Michael Duff wrote an op-ed piece for Work Comp Central , titled “Supreme Court Affirms Full State Reimbursement for Air Ambulance Services.”

The Laramie Boomerang and Casper Star-Tribune reported that UW Vice President for Student Affairs Sean Blackburn told Laramie’s Ad Hoc Community Alcohol Committee that the city should significantly increase the penalties to businesses that sell alcohol to minors. Also publishing the article was The San Antonio Express-News.

UW Professor Ken Sims and fellow scientists are studying the depths of Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park. UW’s release was published on Buckrail’s and Sweetwater NOW’s websites.

Among some of UW’s releases published on Sheridan Media’s website were: Scott Henkel , an associate professor, selected as the new director of the Wyoming Institute for Humanities Research at UW; UW student Dallin Cooper will move his Atmosphere Marketing company from the Wyoming Technology Business Center to his hometown in Riverton; and UW has hired four new faculty members as part of a five-year, $20 million National Science Foundation grant.

The Gillette News Record ran UW’s release on the Jackalope vessel undergoing repairs in hopes the small sailboat can be launched back to sea.

Primeur Weekly! Magazine published UW’s release announcing that faculty members interested in using the National Center for Atmospheric Science-Wyoming Supercomputing Center in Cheyenne for their computational research have until Dec. 28 to submit an application.

UW officials have released, for review, a draft strategic plan designed to better meet the needs of Native American students and their communities, reported Wyoming Public Radio .

The Billings Gazette interviewed Sam Kalen, UW College of Law associate dean, about a Montana Crow tribal member’s treaty rights case that will be heard before the U.S. Supreme Court. The tribal member is accused of killing an elk out of season in Bighorn National Forest four years ago.

Ginger Paige, a UW ecosystem science and management associate professor, told Wyoming Public Radio that most Western states, including Wyoming, like to have control of their water resources. She was commenting on the Trump administration’s proposal to roll back parts of the Clean Water Act.

The Boomerang featured “The Road to Wicked: The Marketing and Consumption of Oz from L. Frank Baum to Broadway,” written by UW professors Kent Drummond, Susan Aronstein and Terri Rittenburg. The book examines the 100-year-old marketing life of Oz.
