State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Forbes mentioned that UW received $1.6 billion in payments among the 42 state agencies during a six-year period beginning in 2013. Forbes was among Wyoming partners that had been asking the Wyoming State Auditor’s Office to produce spending records.

A new study by Robin Barry, UW psychology assistant professor, and her colleagues provides insight into the process of how couples are “pulling away,” or growing apart, and how this can contribute both to relationship distress and depression, according to Psychology Today.

The Laramie Boomerang reported that the Wyoming Senate set the stage for spending of more than $300 million for a UW residence hall project.

Tech Xplore reported that UW Assistant Professor Mike Borowczak and his colleagues have developed an algorithm that safeguards hardware from attacks to steal data.

Cloud Peak Energy has yet to release fourth-quarter earnings, leading to speculation among industry leaders that the company is on the brink of bankruptcy, and the silence is leading to more speculation, UW economist Rob Godby said in an interview published by Coal Zoom.com.

Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) interviewed UW economist Jay Shogren about a bill to keep retiring coal plants alive. Shogren said the bill would likely raise electrical rates, basically taking the form of a tax in order to keep coal moving. Godby and Shogren both were quoted in a Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) article about the legislation.

Community colleges will offer bachelor’s degrees of applied sciences after the Legislature approved a bill that supporters say will help economic development and can improve the number of four-year degrees in Wyoming, WPR noted.

The Boomerang reported that the Senate voted against appropriating $30 million for a replacement for UW’s Corbett Pool and renovations to War Memorial Stadium’s west-side stands.

The Wyoming Legislature passed a measure that would open up scholarship opportunities for more high school students, including the top tier of the Hathaway Scholarship, The Sheridan Press reported.

College Factual ranks UW’s “Communication and Media Studies” accredited program No. 8 among more than 500 programs nationwide in its “Best Value for the Money” survey. The website’s rankings are created to provide students with vital information to help in choosing a degree.

UW graduate Brad Bonner, a Cody attorney, has been named a UW Board of Trustees member by Gov. Mark Gordon, according to a UW release published by Sheridan Media. Bonner succeeds Dave Bostrom, of Worland, who served two 6-year terms. The Gillette News Record also published a similar article.

Northwest Treaty Tribes reported that UW researchers are working with the Makah tribe in Washington state on a three-year study, collecting river otter scat, hair samples and habitat data to learn more about the population in the Lake Ozette watershed and its influence on the lake’s sockeye salmon population.

Jay Norton, a UW ecosystem science and management professor, discussed with WPR how Wyoming farmers can jump into organic farming and how they can market their produce. Those strategies were discussed at the recent High Plains Organic Farming Conference in Cheyenne.

Sweetwater NOW and Sheridan Media published UW’s annual report on its interaction with the state’s counties. Data include enrollment at UW, alumni, local educational programs and local economic impact.

Murdered UW student Matthew Shepard was named one of Means Happy’s “LGBTQ Heroes” as the website celebrated LGBT History Month.

Phys.Org published UW’s release announcing that John Oakey, a UW associate professor of chemical engineering, and his research group have developed an innovative method to isolate cells that are markers of cancer from blood samples.

The entire collection of “The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Wyoming” is on display for the first time at UW’s Art Museum, according to The CS-T.

Tri-State Livestock News and Seed Today published UW’s release detailing how UW researchers are studying how cover crops and the use of high rates of compost affect soil health.

Thomas Foulke, an agricultural economics senior research scientist, will head the state’s first-grains program that will provide a niche for growers in the state, according to a UW release published by Sheridan Media.

Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Dave Barry will discuss his latest book at UW next month, according to a UW release published by Laramie Live.

DVIDS (Defense Visual Information Distribution Service) profiled UW Air Force ROTC cadets Leah Johnke, from Cheyenne, and Victoria Pumilio, of Littleton, Colo.

UW history professor Emeritus Phil Roberts will discuss “John Wesley Powell’s Arid Lands Report” at Western Wyoming Community College later this month as part of the 150th anniversary of Powell’s geographic expedition, according to Sweetwater NOW.

Wyoming Public Media noted that a traveling Black History 101 Mobile Museum drew large crowds during a public Black History Month event on the UW campus.

UW will pay up to $1 million to renovate the Tobin House -- a former sorority building -- that will provide housing for 65 students, according to The Boomerang and CS-T. The Division of Student Affairs’ operating funds will be used for the project.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide previewed the latest Saturday University, featuring four UW faculty and staff members.

UW law Professor Michael Duff commented in an article, published in The Gillette News Record, about undocumented workers who find it hard to access workers’ compensation.

The Sheridan Press covered the latest UW Saturday University presentation in Sheridan that focused on the future of Wyoming coal, which may have to depend on reduced carbon emissions.

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette is on the UW campus training this off-season with Cowboy football players, reported CBS Sports, ESPN’s NFL Nation, NOLA.com and Jaguars.com.

Forbes reported that former UW standout and Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Josh Allen will have some new coaches and receivers when he begins his second season this fall.

A record 64 UW student-athletes were named to the 2018 fall Academic All-Mountain West team, according to its 106 radio. The CS-T added that six UW swimmers and divers have earned All-Mountain West honors.
