UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

CNBC interviewed UW economist Chuck Mason on an article about Canada’s growing energy crisis. Low oil prices have put the economy of Alberta – the country’s largest oil producer -- in crisis, according to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

UW researchers in western Wyoming have determined that the close proximity of wolves causes moose to move, but not enough to drive them from their preferred habitats -- especially late in the winter. UW’s release was published by BioPortfolio and Bioengineer.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW economist Rob Godby, who discussed three bills intended to tax wind energy in the state that were introduced in the Wyoming Legislature this year. A similar article was published by Civil and Structural Engineer.

UW’s release -- focusing on a recent study led by UW researcher Bryan Shuman showing that past indicators from dramatic climate change can predict how future changes will play out -- was published by Phys.org and Health Medicine Network.

The Casper Star-Tribune and KGWN TV noted that a recent amendment to a purchase agreement between Albany County and the Pilot Hill property owner gives the university a $2 million option to buy some of the land.

James Trosper, executive director of UW’s High Plains American Indian Research Institute, disputes General Mills’ claim that its energy bar is a ‘first of Its kind” product, because Native Americans have eaten similar food for hundreds of years, according to The San Antonio Express.

The Des Moines Register cited a UW study on how much the name of a school is worth to a player as a result of its branding. The UW 2017 UW study found that the university received the value of $46 million in branding from quarterback Josh Allen’s rise to a top-10 NFL draft selection.

UW’s program was ranked 11th best “Master in Online Teaching Programs” by Online Masters. “Students receive more one-on-one faculty instruction and can better collaborate and network with other peers as they progress through the program,” according to the publication.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed several UW students who voiced approval of the university’s plan to construct new residence halls.

Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon signed a bill that allows state funds to be used to construct new residence halls at UW, The Boomerang reported.

The Boomerang interviewed Michael Barker, a UW civil engineering professor, who will chair the UW Strategic Improvement Working Group that will address issues raised from the Great Colleges to Work for Survey administered last spring.

UW’s EdD in Education: Learning, Design and Technology program is ranked No. 7 among Online College Plan’s “Top 30 Online Ph.D. Programs in Curriculum & Instruction.” UW’s program “could prepare you for a career in design, instruction and administration,” and “you could seek work in a K-12 environment or higher education, as well as corporate or government centers,” according to the survey.

American University Radio, in Washington, D.C., interviewed UW psychology Professor Matt Gray about taking a life in self-defense, which is a relatively new field of study experts call moral injury.

Laramie residents battled last week’s major snowstorm that caused several closures, including UW for 1.5 days, according to The Boomerang. The CS-T reported on the storm, which also featured UW.

Wyoming Public Radio reported that 307 Meat Company President Kelcey Christensen, UW’s meat lab director, plans to open up a meat processing plant in Laramie later this summer.

UW economist Rob Godby was quoted in an Associated Press article about the financial woes of Cloud Peak Energy, which appears headed for bankruptcy. The article was published on K2 Radio’s website.

UW student Moriah Williams, from Powell, discussed her ambassadorship with the university’s Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship during a presentation at the Cody Rotary Club, noted The Cody Enterprise.

Sweetwater NOW published UW’s release announcing that senior Mikayla Peterson, a saxophonist from Rock Springs, was selected the winner of the recent Dorothy Jacoby Concerto Competition.

Local students received awards at the recent State Science Fair on the UW campus, according to The Sublette Examiner.

High Plains Journal/Midwest Ag Journal noted that Derek Scasta, UW Extension range management specialist, received an Outstanding Young Professional Award at the recent Society for Range Management conference.

"Jump Shot,” a documentary on Kenny Sailors, UW’s legendary basketball player, premiered last week at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, reported KOWB Radio. Sailors led Wyoming to the 1943 NCAA Championship and is credited with inventing the shot that revolutionized the sport.

The CS-T reported that UW Cowgirl senior point guard Clara Tapia was named Academic All-America second team after earning first-team Academic All-District VII honors last month. The Barcelona, Spain, native has a 4.0 grade-point average, majoring in molecular biology and chemistry.
