UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Laramie Boomerang noted that some members of the UW Housing Task Force favor the building of a parking garage on campus, calling it a priority of the planned residence hall construction project.

UW is planning a $10 million renovation of the College of Law to be mostly completed by September 2020, when the college will celebrate its 100th anniversary, The Boomerang reported. The main purpose of the renovation is to bring the college’s clinics into the actual College of Law Building. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch is expected to speak on campus as part of the law school’s centennial celebration. U.S. News and World Report also reported on the news.

The Rock Springs Rocket Miner noted that UW was among sponsors of the Sesquicentennial Colorado River Exploring Expedition that departed from Expedition Island in Green River Friday, May 24, in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of John Wesley Powell’s expedition’s departure from the same spot on May 24, 1869.

UW signed an agreement with Clean Coal Technologies Inc. to develop a cleaner-burning coal in the Powder River Basin, reported Mining Magazine.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed Lusha Tronstad, research scientist with the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database at UW, who was among researchers on a project that discovered that changes to alpine streams fed by glaciers and snowfields due to a warming climate threaten to alter the types of bacteria and other microbes in those streams.

Erick Robinson, a postdoctoral associate research scientist in the UW Department of Anthropology, was a co-author of a paper that discovered ancient civilizations engaged in globalization to a much higher level than previously assumed, noted ZME Science.

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) reported that Kevin Monteith, a UW assistant professor, and his graduate student team are working with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department on a study to find why the Whiskey Mountain bighorn sheep population is decreasing.

Reinette Tendore, UW Native American Program adviser, spoke with Wyoming Public Radio about the importance of Wyoming school districts allowing Native students to bead their high school graduation caps to honor their heritage.

The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education noted that Kwanna King was recently named UW’s registrar. She was the registrar at Connors State College in Warner, Okla., the past eight years.

UW graduate student Jake Ruthven, from Fort Collins, Colo., was mentioned in a Powell Tribune article. Ruthven worked with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to check the growth of the walleye population in Deaver Reservoir.

U.S. News and World Report featured UW in its College Guide for Non-Traditional Students. The article noted that UW’s Non-Traditional Student Council aims to give nontraditional students a voice on campus and urges students to become actively involved on campus.

UW Extension Educator Jeremiah Vardiman told The Cody Enterprise that certain crops in Park County have been harmed by cold spring weather, delaying planting of sugar beet, corn, sunflower, dried beans and soybean seeds.

UW sophomore Christopher Henry, from Laramie, was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District first team for men’s cross country and track and field, reported The CS-T.

SweetwaterNOW noted that UW track and field Coach Quincy Howe was named the Mountain Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
