State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Casper Star-Tribune (CS-T) interviewed UW economist Rob Godby, who said last week’s merger between Arch Coal and Peabody Energy would probably not compromise the partnership from the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust division, which enforces laws to ensure a competitive marketplace. The St. Louis Dispatch and The Wall Street Journal interviewed Godby for similar articles.

Godby also told The Gillette News Record that it is difficult to predict how much interest there will be to sell the financially struggling coal company Cloud Peak Energy, which has assets in the Powder River Basin. He also commented to WyoFile about Gov. Mark Gordon’s push to help save Wyoming’s coal industry.

National Public Radio highlighted the Wyoming Center on Aging at UW, which created Healthy U, which is based on a program originally developed at Stanford University. The program supports people with chronic diseases and their caregivers by teaching self-management skills and offering a support group. Becker’s Health Review published a similar article.

UW botany and hydrology doctoral student Daniel Beverly’s research details response of sagebrush to the 2017 solar eclipse, according to a UW release published by Science Codex.

Moab Sun News reported on the Sesquicentennial Colorado River Exploring Expedition project that is part of a UW-based project surrounding the 150th anniversary of explorer John Wesley Powell’s legendary journey that launched on the Green River and ended in the Grand Canyon.

UW botany Assistant Professor Catherine Wagner is studying if the makeup of zooplankton in the Wind River Range waters has influenced change in fish in lakes, reported Wyoming Public Radio.

Design and Development Today published an article on Drilling Systems’ work with UW’s College of Engineering and Applied Science to build the Drilling and Completions Simulation Laboratory at UW. The new laboratory will be used to train future petroleum engineers.

Wyoming House Speaker Steve Harshman told a crowd last week that the Cooper House would probably not be demolished to make way for new residence halls on the UW campus, reported The Laramie Boomerang.

Wyo4News published the university’s release noting that UW researchers and a Casper medical company teamed up to develop an augmented reality system that will make ultrasound-guided surgical injection procedures easier.

Gov. Mark Gordon formed a task force of experts -- led by UW’s Steve Farkas -- to study the state’s tax structure and produce models that will allow his administration to take “a realistic view” of Wyoming’s energy-reliant tax structure, reported The CS-T.

The Pole Mountain Trail Project outside Laramie recently won a national award for its use of Recreational Trails Program funds in the Public-Private Partnerships category. UW’s Ruckelshaus Institute helped Wyoming Pathways develop the pathways project three years ago, KGAB Radio noted.

UW worked with the Wyoming Army National Guard on a land deal that enabled the guard to construct a new facility near Laramie Regional Airport, according to KGAB Radio. The facility officially opened earlier this month.

KGAB Radio published UW’s feature on recent doctoral graduate Dean Wilson, who recently won more than $20,000 in cash and prizes on the popular daytime game show “Wheel of Fortune.”

WyoSports noted that former UW basketball player Justin James was selected by the Sacramento Kings as the No. 40 pick during last week’s NBA draft.
